Over time, other tribes also moved into what is now Kankakee Township: The Potawatomi in 1825; Sauk in 1847; Kickapoo in 1850;Illinoisans in 1861;and Dakota Sioux in 1865-66. In 1903, when federal law changed the name of all Ulysses S Grant County townships within Illinois from “Grant”To “Kankakee” after his service as President Abraham Lincoln’s personal secretary and acting Governor of Illinois (1863-65), many local residents objected to this change because they felt that Grant should have received credit for his work rather than be given a township name that had nothing to do with him - such as Olivette or Mount Greenwood Heights! Today, there are still a few residents who insist on using Grant Township names – like Parkwood Estates or Highland Hills – but most residents today live within either Kankaokee or Granttownships proper (though there are still occasional references to Olivette/Mount Greenwood Heights).

Kankakee, Illinois is a town in Kankakee County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,568 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Kankakee" comes from the Ojibwe word kanka-wáa ( meaning "thicket"). The first white settlers in Kankakee were Robert and Deborah Cook who arrived in 1785. They built a cabin on the east side of what is now State Street. In 1802, they bought 4 acres (1 km²) of land and named it Kankakee Township. The first post office was established in 1804 at their cabin by Samuel Fenton with the name "Cookstown." In 1809, John Marshall built a log cabin on what is now Wabash Avenue near present day McKinley Park; he named it Marshalltown after his father-in-law Colonel James Marshall. By 1830, most of the current village had been laid out when Josephine Moultrie purchased property along Center Road from Captain Lewis Cass for $600. She renamed it Kankakee after her mother's home state of New York City and began to build homes there. When Chicago was founded as an independent city in 1837, many residents chose to move away from central business district life to escape mosquitoes that carried malaria and other diseases during those early years of American settlement. Many farmers also relocated to new settlements west of downtown Chicago due to railroad infrastructure that made transportation more affordable than travelling miles inland into hostile country terrain. As freight traffic grew increasingly important in developing Chicago during this time period, businesses began moving their operations closer to railroads so that employees could easily commute into work each morning or evening without leaving their homes late at night or traveling long distances on dangerous routes). Consequently, many businesses within walking distance of each other moved out into open fields or abandoned buildings along Indiana Avenue which became known as “the Prairie” because so much grain was being shipped down that route! In 1840s and 1850s several families who had lived near where modern day McKinley Park stands started moving back into their old home/ storefronts following purchase by neighboring landowners south of Michigan Ave., including John Pappagelli Sr., Narcissa Watts (later Lady Abercrombie), George Marsden (later General Motors), Elias Howe & wife Polly Howe etcetera….. continued selling groceries until about 1925 when grocery stores became very popular among working class people who did not have cars 📧 instead they brought produce… lots And LOTS OF Produce!!!
