Kankakee, Illinois is a small town in southern Illinois and part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The population was 9,821 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kane County. Kankakee is located on the Kankakee River, about 20 miles south of Chicago and 50 miles north-west of St. Louis. The first European to visit what is now Kankakee was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 when he reported seeing "a great plain watered by many rivers" situated near present day Villa Park, IL. A year later, Nicholas Bourgiont arrived in search of a route to New Orleans and charted the river course that would take him to Kankakee (then known as Canandaigua). Captain John Cook sailed past Kankakee on his return from his third voyage around Cape Horn in 1795 while searching for a new route to Asia. In 1814, during the Mexican–American War, American General Zachary Taylor destroyed Fort Michaliceto at modern day Pembroke Pines on Lake Michigan's west side - this event helped trigger an influx of settlers into eastern Kane County from nearby Wayne and DuPage counties. In 1846, following Brown v. Board of Education (1854), public schools were opened in all urban areas throughout Illinois; however,elementary school students continued to attend private academies until 1954 when compulsory education became mandatory statewide in Illinois under then-Governor Adlai Stevenson's Elementary School Act which also mandated that all children within one mile (1 km) of any school must be attendance at that school from Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade regardless of parents' ability or desire not to send their children there; prior to this time only wealthy families had access to high quality primary/middle school education for their children outside their homes due primarily to transportation costs and prohibitively expensive enrollments at large rural academies where students learned either home-schooling or attending religious Institutes/Schools run by Jesuits or other similar institutions with no hope for future success after finishing high school such as Eunice Kennedy Shriver did while living at her maternal grandparents' farm called 'Mount Holyoke'. Today's community began developing rapidly after World War II when numerous businesses were founded here including Ford Motor Company which built its world headquarters here followed by Chrysler Corporation before moving its operations overseas; Quaker Oats moved here from North America; Wrigley Field became home field for both the Chicago Cubs and St Louis Cardinals MLB teams before being vacated for use as a NASA launch pad during Earth orbit launches; Guggenheim Museum moved here from New York City before becoming a world renowned museum dedicated exclusivelyto art & architecture... among others!
