This group purchased 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land north of present day Kankakee from the Illini Nation with proceeds from their conflict with Potawatomi Indians over that same territory. The town site was chosen because there were no rivers or natural lakes available nearby to provide water for livestock and settlements had to be built close to waterways so that goods could be transported easily. The first phase of development began in 1840 when builder John Sweeny erected a log cabin on what is now First Street east of Center Avenue. By 1850, other early settlers included Isaac Meigs who started homesteading on Deerfield Road northeast of town; William Wetherbee on Muscatine Road northwest of town; Sylvester Greenough on Third Street southeast of town; and David Freeman on Fourth Street southwest of town. One issue faced by early settlers was finding enough water to irrigate their crops and many buildings were constructed without access to private wells which limited their usefulness for some time until technical advances helped increase irrigation availability throughout much Midwest during this period Kankakee grew rapidly due largely to its location – convenient transportation links made it an important center for trade with neighboring towns along the Illinois River Valley as well as Indiana and Michigan Territory during this time period as well as its role as an agricultural center providing food for soldiers served in skirmishes along Ironton Ridge during The Great Lakes Rebellion in 1811-15

Kankakee is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,873 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Kankakee River, south of Chicago. The village was founded by white settlers in 1836 and named after the Kankakee Creek (now known as the Rock Island Railroad). The first post office was established in 1838. In 1841, Kankakee became part of the new state of Illinois. The first school opened in Kankakee in 1841 and operated for one year. By 1870 there were over 300 residents living in downtown Kankaokee while just 50 residents lived on farms outside of town limits- this number increased to 400 by 1880 due to railroad construction which contributed greatly to growth within town boundaries during this time period In 1886 an armory/water Tank factory complex was built adjacent to what is now Third Street Elementary School with accompanying housing additions that remain today In 1898 another water Tank factory complex (the White Pines Factory Complex) was added along with several residences also existing today across from Northwestern High School which housed students until 1984 when it closed its doors completely .
