Kankakee is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,853 at the 2010 census. The Kankakee area has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 12,000 years. The first European to visit the area was French trader Jean Baptiste Point du Sable in 1679. In 1795, Kankakee became part of the Indiana Territory and was organized as a village under the name of "Kankakee". In 1814, land adjacent to what is now Kankakee was purchased by Abraham Lincoln from Nathan Richardson for $2,500. On July 15, 1815, John Quincy Adams arrived in Chicago and delivered a speech at the Lyceum Theater denouncing slavery and urging American soldiers to fight against it on behalf of slaveholders. Adams' speech caused an uproar among abolitionists who saw it as an endorsement of slavery. He left Chicago for Kankakee that evening after being heckled by local citizens. In 1870–71 Rufus King surveyed and platted what is now downtown Kankakee. A post office called "Kankakee" was established in 1875 and remained in operation until 1907; its last activity being processing mail just east of the present-day intersection of First Street and State Street (now University Avenue). A stop on the old Union Pacific Railroad line near today's downtown street corner served as a passenger station from 1887 to 1957 when all trains stopped at Waukegan Junction (now West Side Highway/I- 55). This stop also served as the terminal for freight trains using both tracks leading north into Decatur County while Amtrak ran its Saturday morning service between Chicago Union Station and Decatur via Menomonee Falls before continuing up I-55 past Winnetka into Racine County; this service ended with Amtrak's merger with US Airways in 2006. Thereafter only express buses used this terminal which until recently still stands vacant although deteriorating condition has made it difficult or impossible to determine when it might be torn down completely given its age & lack of recent attention despite strong advocacy from preservationists active since about 2005 When Amtrak pulled out all weekend services south of Chicago due to budget cuts there appeared to be little hope that anything would happen but fortunately some friends decided to put together an event where people from around Chicagoland could come together make their case why Amtrak should keep running through town
The Kankakee area was first settled by the Sauk people in the early 19th century. The area became a part of Illinois after the Union victory in the American Civil War. In 1871, Kankakee was incorporated as a village and remained that way until 1954.
