Kankakee, Illinois is a small town located in the northwestern corner of Illinois. The population was 12,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Kankakee was founded in 1839 by Captain John Kapp and his family. The town is named after an Indian tribe that lived in central Illinois before European settlement. The first settler in Kankakee was Capt. John Kapp, who arrived with his family in 1839. He built a cabin on a hilltop and named his new community after the Pekin (Ojibwe) tribe that he knew from his childhood days in central Illinois. In 1840, Capt. John's son George also settled in Kankakee and began to cultivate land around the cabin according to Indian custom. By 1844, all but two of Capts John's children had moved away from their original homes and begun to settle permanently in what became known as "the Village." In 1865, when Centralia was founded nearby by farmers looking for land to irrigate their crops, they brought over some of the Ojibwe people who had been living near them for years and started to call themselves "Kankakeese." As time passed more Ojibwe people came into contact with white settlers hereabouts, eventually forming their own communities or clans called kinnahees within our rural boundaries: Menomonee Falls (1872-1979), Arlington Heights (1901-2004), Niles (1976-present). Finally – following intermarriage between several kinnahee families – all present residents of Kane County were officially counted as "Kaneese" on July 1st, 1979 when we adopted our current name incorporating all those ancestral origins as one unitary entity! According to village historian Norma Jorgensen: “The Village” actually included three hamlets clustered around CaptainJohn’s Cabin; these areas would come under different names over time: Niles (later Arlington Heights), Menomonee Falls and Kaneville/Lake Forest until finally reaching its present form through intermarriage on July 1st 1979….. even though most everyone who lived here during its early days probably considered themselves Kaneese…. much like today we continue to be proud members ol' our community & proudly identify ourselves with our heritage….. In 1865, during World War II, Kankakee participated in the Battle of Des Moines Creek when American forces fought against German troops occupying Iowa Territory following World War I hostilities. Afterward, local businesses helped support various war efforts including providing food and materials to military installations around Chicago and helping with broadcasts from Navy Pier across Lake Michigan into Germany via shortwave radio service (later television).
