Kankakee, Illinois is a small town in southern Illinois that was founded in 1825. The population was 9,271 at the 2010 census. Kankakee is located on the Kankakee River and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Kankakee" means "a place where it rained." The Village of Kankakee was organized on October 1, 1825 by a group of farmers who purchased land from the Ottoway Native Americans. The Village had a post office and six stores. A school was built in 1830, and a Baptist church was built in 1835. In 1847, an act to create townships were passed by the General Assembly of Illinois; Kankakee Township was created and named for Colonel Samuel Waguespacker, who donated land to the township. In 1865, Kankakee Township became one of twelve villages within Cook County when that county was created from parts of Will County and Kane County. Kankakee's first settler were three men known as The Three Musketeers: James McNamara (1814-1892), John Hickey (1817-1875) and Nicholas Gist (1800-1881). These men bought two tracts of land west of present day Route 506 which they called White Sands Prairie after their white muskets which they used to hunt game near this spot during winter months. The next year saw more settlers come to what would become Kankakee from all over central Illinois including Des Plaines, Aurora and Lombard Counties. By 1850 there were twenty families living in what is now downtown Kankakee with nineteen buildings including four churches - Episcopal Zion Baptist Church (founded 1793), First Presbyterian Church (founded 1827), German Reformed Dutch Lutheran Church (founded 1796) and Methodist Episcopal Church (founded 1830). In addition to these churches there were several family homes scattered around town including those belonging to Amos Kendall, John McNamara Jr., George Belden & Sons Mfg Co., David Pease & Bros., Elisha Pease & Sons Mfg Co., Jens Jensen & Son’s Millinery Store and Jacob Weisbach’s grocery store which still stands today on State Street north of the river just east of where Interstate 90 crosses it today. In 1870 Alfred Ives founded Ives Brothers Lumber Company with his brother Augustus Ives on half acreage east of Main Street between Washington Avenue/Hawthorne Boulevard and Third Street/Wabash Avenue southwest of Northwestern University which would later become home to Rheingold Corporation also headquartered in downtown Chicago until its sale for $1 billion to JP Morgan Chase in 2008 However prior to this time most business activity took place at McNamara’s Warehouse at 222 N Harrison St across from Northwestern University – once again becoming home to many businesses such as Jens Jensen’s Grocery Store until 1978 when it closed due largely to fires started by students Lockwood Harvey Museum opened nearby along Harrison Street northeast corner Jefferson Park Road starting February 4th 1988 continuing operation daily until May 5th 2003 museum closed due lack funding

Kankakee is a small town in Illinois, United States. The population was 7,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name Kankakee comes from Kan-ka-kee (a Sioux word meaning "Catfish Creek"). The first Europeans to visit the area were Jesuit missionaries in 1690, who named it for St. Augustine of Canterbury because of its abundance of catfish. In 1814, General James Kansa burned down the village for refusing to give up their land to the United States government in what was known as the Battle of Kankakee Lake. In 1847, Kankakee became a station on Illinois Central Railroad's Dubuque Division and soon afterwards incorporated as a city. On December 15, 1907, it changed its name to Chicago due to controversies over how best to promote itself as an important center for industry and commerce within Illinois instead of just east of Springfield where most people lived (Chicago had been renamed City Hall three times before). Since then Kankakee has experienced steady growth with several major businesses opening up shop here including Abbott Laboratories and Motorola Mobility followed by Job Corps and FirstMerit Bank among others. Today’s downtown business district is one of the most vibrant in all of Chicagoland with anchor stores like Macy’s and Sears adding new floorplates every few years while restaurants continue to open up around town filling many vacated storefronts over time – making it one OF THE MOST DIVERSE SETTING IN ALL OF CHICAGO!
Kankakee, Illinois was founded on the banks of the Kankakee River in 1812. The town was named for Major John C. Kankakee, a military leader who fought in the Indian Wars. In 1824, Kankakee became a county seat and remained so until it was moved to its present location in 1881.
