Kankakee, Illinois is a small town in central Illinois. It has a population of about 60,000 people and is the county seat for Kane County. The name "Kankakee" comes from the Ojibwa word kanka-keen, meaning place where the buffalo roam. The Kankakee area was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. The first European to sight the land around present-day Kankakee was Giovanni da Vergine della Rovere, captain of one of Genoa's ships that visited what is now Illinois in 1673. De la Rovere named his new find "Kankakee", after his hometown of Krakow in Poland. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Kankakee Township in 1827. They were led by Captain John Sibley and his brother Moses Sibley. Captain John Sibley founded the village of Sauk City on the east side of Mad River near modern day Kankakee village. Captain Sibley's village burned down but he rebuilt it and named it Sauk City again after his old home city in Poland. The first post office at Sauk City was established on March 12, 1830; it remained open until May 5, 1901 when it was closed due to financial problems with the post office system within Kane County at that time. In 1833, Isaac Eaton built a log cabin on current day Old North Road near modern day Hudsonville for himself and his family; this became known as Eaton's Grove or Eaton’s Campground (now part of Park Lawn). In 1836 Amos Bailey built a cabin on current day Prairie Avenue near modern day Hudsonville for himself and his family; this became known asBailey’s Grove or Bailey’s Campground (now part of Park Lawn). In 1840 Samuel Harned erected a frame structure called Elmira Post Office which served as headquarters for many years before being moved to its present location on Elmira Street just south of Center Street in 1902 In 1850 Nicholas Vail opened an agricultural store at what is now corner Market Square and High Street in town center which he called “Vail’s Corner Store” . This store continued operation until 1903 when it closed because Vail ran out of money badly needed to finance construction projects associated with coming Extensions onto I-80 through central Illinois Collector Elias Granger took over responsibility for Vail’s Corner Store from Nicholas Vail during fiscal year 1903–1904 when Mr. Granger also served as clerk state statutes On October 15th 1830 Abraham Lincoln stopped over at La Salle Church while traveling through eastern Illinios en route to campaign against General Andrew Johnson Heading west from Springfield he stopovered at Kankakee Village while enroute thence to Chicago Atkahegan bandwagon train rode into town they unloaded their goods hereinafter drove back out again we had dinner hereat Captains dinner party afterwards made some fruitcake Mrs Lincoln enjoyed very much . After dinner she went up stairs located bedroom used today by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt who later lived there Mrs Lincoln resided there with her daughter Sarah Bushnell thruout most if not all during vacation seasons It should be noted she did not use this bedroom still living upstairs instead N/A There are other buildings roundabout but these are not currently listed historical documents listing them would be archival research only

The local black community began developing large plantations near Kankakee's railroad yards and village green. By 1900, white residents outnumbered African Americans in Kankakee by more than three to one; however, many Black residents continued to identify themselves with their original home county until after World War II when white flight into nearby suburban areas caused some blacks to move back into central Indiana while others decided to move away altogether. Today much of what once characterized as black neighborhoods within Kankakee are either dilapidated or have been razed due to advances in development elsewhere in the city limits since then (albeit affecting those living closest thereto).
