Kankakee, Illinois is a small town in the northwest corner of Illinois. The population was 3,098 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Johnson County, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Kankakee was Jacob Hartsfield in 1815. The town was founded in 1837 by Colonel John Grimes and his family. In 1840, Kankakee had a population of 1,000 people and it became an important stop on the Underground Railroad during the 1830s and 1840s. A cotton gin was built in 1845 by John Dickey and it became one of Kankakee's biggest employers. In 1865, Kankakee lost its post office when Streator received that title from Chicago after being merged into that city. However, it regained its post office status in 1870 when Bloomington lost theirs to Paris. In 1893, a new courthouse was built and it served as the seat for both Johnson County Courthouse District No. 2 (the area around Kankakee) and for surrounding counties until 1959 when that district became part of Cook County Circuit Court District No 9 (the area around Chicago). In 1975, two tornadoes struck Kankakee; one killed three people and injured many more inside a grocery store while shoppers were shopping for food; additionally, five homes were destroyed or damaged as a result of the storm surge which flooded several streets near downtown Kankakee overnight on November 25-26th1975 A community center opened in 2006 adjacent to Knob Creek Elementary School which serves as the primary educational facility for all students withinJohnson County Schools

Kankakee is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 17,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Kankakee is one of three towns in Cook County (the other two are Palatine and Wheaton) that were both established as districts on March 15, 1838 by the General Assembly of Illinois under the new state government. The first settler in what is now Kankakee was John Fenton who arrived there in 1827. He named his tract "Fenton Township". A post office called Fenton was established in 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. On July 1, 1837, a group of twenty-four men comprising Hemanus Swayne (founder), James Gillespie (of Peoria), Peter Haggerty (founder and first justice of the peace), Jonas Kilgore (founder and justice of the peace for La Salle Township), Samuel Tilton (of Geneva) and David Whitcomb founded Kankakee Village which became the nucleus around which development took place. In 1840–41 an act was passed providing for township organization within Cook County; accordingly on March 15th,1840 John Dutton set about organizing a township committee with Isaac Meeker as its chairman On May 7th he completed organization by filing an plat with pioneer Elias Howe . From this date forward all business transacted within the boundaries thereof should be known as "Kankakee Township" transactions being hereafter published hereinunder . In pursuance to said order there were also organized on June 12th 1840 Sarah Hubbard daughter of Ebenezer Hubbard ; Emmet Blythe wife of Amos Blytheresident physician at Carbondale ; Levi Manheim carpenter; Abram Moreland laborer; George Goodrich farmer; Elijah Postman shoemaker ; George Atwater miller; Samuel American trader .
