Grant's army during their march across the country towards Fort Dearborn under cover of night. After Washington's victory over Tecumseh at Peoria on November 8, 1818, General Grant ordered all American troops retreating across the Mississippi River towards Springfield to be evacuated by boat over the rapids at Vandalia Landing on December 12th. Assemblemen met that evening to begin building fortifications around what would become known as "the Island". On January 2nd, 1840 Governor Daniel Dennett issued a proclamation calling for settlers to come forward with land grants for settlement west of Nauvoo River and north ofUpton Road (later Independence Road). On February 14th thousand acres were Donation Land extended westward from Nauvoo River along present day Dempster Street into what later becameKankakee Township; east limits are now part of Metropolis Township (now Elgin) and south limits are now part of Hoffman Estates (now Glenview). five hundred acres were donated by Rev Jesse Jackson Sr., founder and president emeritusof Rainbow Campaigns International Incorporated which accepted reservations beginning October 1st 1959 when Congress authorized such programs following passage of Executive Order 10810 created pursuant thereto; seventyone years after his death! Kankakee is a town in the St. Clair County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and lies east of Chicago on the Kankakee River. Its name comes from an Algonquin word meaning "place of plenty." The first Europeans to enter what is now Kankakee were French traders in 1671. Captain Jacques Marquette and his party explored the river in 1679 and noted its many islands. In 1828 Samuel Hennepin built a gristmill on current-day Waveland Street which soon became an important commercial center for surrounding villages including Kankakee and North Aurora. By 1830 there were twenty-one businesses operating in Kankakee with over $10,000 worth of merchandise sold each month! The first school opened in 1847 but it closed due to financial problems within a few years. A new school building was constructed in 1850 using funds raised through local auctions and sales of goods seized during Indian Wars or raids by Ulysses S Grant's troops that had occurred during that period near present-day West Aurora Avenue and State Street.. This structure served as the nucleus around which all subsequent schools were founded; kindergarten through eighth grade classes started here in 1860 (the old high school building being torn down) while junior high/elementary pupils began attending schools within walking distance starting about 1915 when Wabash Avenue crossed over into downtownChicago (east side). In 1905 two brothers--Harry Wendell Holmes Sr./John Leland Stanford Jr.--founded Stanford University south of town on campus now known as Palo Alto Road just west of Center Courtintegering their gift at $100 million against any possible objections from other students or alumni who might want to keep their institution independent from Stanford University proper! That same year also saw groundbreaking for what would become Kankakee Regional Medical Center; construction continued through 1939 before finally coming to an end due to World War II efforts to build ships yards nearby (Kankakee Heights), although some small bits and pieces have been rebuilt since then! All told, over 100 different businesses have operated here since 1800 making it one continuous commercial pulse that has never lost its vitality or energy! Although some residents have left for greener pastures such as Downers Grove or Wheaton IL while others have migrated away entirely such as Joliet IL - all indications are that today’s community remains firmly rooted herein since its inception more than 150 years ago!

Kankakee was founded by the French in 1779 and named for Jean-Baptiste Kankakee, an explorer and missionary who explored the area in the 18th century. The first permanent settler in what is now Kankakee was Nicholas Duchamps in 1814. The first school in Kankakee was built in 1817 by Reverend John White. In 1825, a post office called "Kankakee" was established at a location where present day First Street and State Road 6 intersect today. In 1827, J. Swayne erected a log cabin on current day First Street north of present day State Road 6. In 1830, Isaac Nevin bought land east of present day Second Street and south of Park Avenue from Nicholas Duchamps for $100 per acre ($ ). In 1840 he moved his family to their new home which they named Prairie View A&M University after Prairie View Observatory near Dallas, Texas where he had been educated as an astronomer before moving to America to become part of one of the early American astronomy communities that sprang up around Austin while James Clerk Maxwell's work on light waves from distant stars continued there at UT Austin . Nevin served as president or chancellor (1851- 1863)of PVA until his death in 1865 aged 80 years old when vision problems caused him to step down from that position following multiple strokes On July 24th 1870 Union troops burned down PVA's brick buildings along with all other educational institutions throughout Illinois during the American Civil War including those located within 5 miles of Nauvoo Landing Missouri due to issues over how much federal funding should be given towards such private universities rather than public schools
