The first recorded use of gun chokes in Kankakee, Illinois, was on November 8th, 1892. A man named James Blackmore was convicted of shooting at two men while they walked down the street. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole, but he successfully appealed his sentence and received a reduced sentence of 10 years imprisonment. This event is often cited as the beginning of gun control in America.

Kankakee is a town in Illinois, United States. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. Kankakee is the county seat of Kane County. It lies on the Chicago-St. Louis metropolitan area and is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Joliet Combined Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Kankakee were French traders in 1679, and Jesuit missionaries in 1721. The first permanent settler was George Weiser, who built a cabin on the present site of downtown in 1836. The first post office was established in 1839; it moved from South Bend to Kankakee in 1853. The town began to grow rapidly after railroads arrived here in the early 19th century: In 1857, Kankakee became one of five townships served by the Hannibal Railroad; it received its charter as a city on November 1, 1865. In 1893, when Joliet annexed parts of Kane County including much of north central Illinois (including Kankakee), residents voted to create their own city separate from Joliet; this was known as "Citizens' City". From 1896 until 2000, Kankakee had its own mayor and council system with elected officials responsible for all aspects of municipal government except policing and fire protection; however, these elected officials continued to report to Joliet Mayor Tom Kelly until his retirement effective December 31st, 2020 . On May 14th 2018 it was announced that Mayor Tom Kelly would be retiring at the end of 2020 having been with us since 1996

Kankakee is a small town in east-central Illinois that has been inhabited for over three centuries. The village was first settled by the Kankakees, an Iroquois tribe, in 1769. The village was incorporated as a town in 1847. By the early 21st century, Kankakee's population had shrunk to just over 500 residents. However, the community has retained its significance as a cultural and historical center within the region. The history of Kankakee begins with the arrival of European settlers in what is now Illinois in the late 17th century. One of these settlers, Nicholas Ville de la Salle, founded a small trading post on the banks of the Kankakee River in 1769. Over time, other Europeans arrived and started to settle in what is now eastern Illinois; among these arrivals were Frenchmen who erected Fort Chartres near present-day Quincy on Lake Michigan in 1795. This fort served as a base from which French traders and missionaries explored and traded with Native Americans throughout much of northeast Indiana andwestern Ohio (now Kentucky). From this base, they established roads and villages northwestward into what is now central Illinois. One such explorer was Pierre François Xavier Laclède, captain of La Salle’s ship Notre Dame de Paris during his explorations along Lake Michigan’s western shoreline between 1793 and 1800. Laclède traveled through much of this area before reaching Kankakee on July 14, 1800; he named it after Renault de Montmorency (1568–1643), countship councillor at Tournai during Queen Anne’s War (1701–14). At that time, Duchêneclear Township lay withinpresent-day Chicago County; however, Laclède decided to naming an armory after one of his fellow officers at Tournai—a decision which soon changed when military forces under General James Dearborn captured Tournai on October 16, 1800 and placed its defender general Claude Le Roy therein instead. Laclède continued exploring southeast Indiana until his return home to France on January 8oth1800; from there he began planning his next roundtrip journey down lake Michigan's western shoreline—the so-called Grande Tour—which would take him all the way to Stonington Bay near modern day Peoria Heights IL – thus completing his exploration of Northwest Indiana/Ohio beyond Miami Counties! sometime around this time another groupof explorers consistingof Pierre Dorion De La Vallièreand Nicolas Perrot(alias Joseph) moved inland from Georgian Bayou towards present day Jacksonville IL) while others remained offiicialy at Fort Chartres withCaptainPierreFrançoisXavierLaclée
Kankakee was originally a much smaller village in the area now known as Kankakee County, Illinois. It was settled by Dutch immigrants in the early 1800s, and quickly grew into a small town. The first post office was established in 1835, and the first school was opened in 1846. By the 1850s, Kankakee had reached its peak as a busy commercial center. However, this prosperity came at a cost: development of the railroad made it easier for goods to move through the area, which led to increased traffic and congestion. This caused social unrest and economic hardship for many residents. In 1865, Kankakee became part of Uniontown Township; however, it remained an independent community until 1990 when it merged with neighboring village of Odem to form one large Village of Kankakee.
