Firearm clothing has a long and proud history in Kankakee, Illinois. Originally handguns were just that- handguns. But as the firearms industry grew, so did the need for firearm clothing. The shop served as a place where servicemen could purchase all sorts of military-grade clothing and gear including rifles, shotguns, and pistols. In 1979, G.I Joe Gun Shops closed its doors but not its store location; it moved to what is now the corner of Wabash Avenue and Second Street in downtown Kankakee. In 1984, the city of Kankakee passed an ordinance allowing concealed carry of handguns with exceptions for police officers who have a valid permit from their agency or who are acting in self-defense (i.e., reasonable people would believe they are defending themselves). This ordinance was known as The Open Carry Ordinance because it allowed any person with a handgun license to openly carry their weapon anywhere within city limits without fear of prosecution or suspension from carrying a pistol outside his home or workplace pursuant to state law (see also “Gun Rights and Banalities: What You Don’t Know about Concealed Carry Ordinances”). With this new law came new opportunities for firearm retail businesses like GGI Joe Gun Shops to open up throughout the city proper; however, due to zoning restrictions on storefronts within certain business districts (*See also Top Ten Reasons Why Concealed Carry Laws Are important), these stores were few and far between until recently when they have more than doubled in number thanks to initiatives by Mayor Randy Carpenter*[1],[2]. To date there have been over twenty-four gun shops located throughout downtown Kankakee*, making it one of America’s most heavily trafficked cities for firearms sales! These stores offer consumers everything from high quality name brand firearms to unique items not typically seen elsewhere such as ammunition boxes filled with rounds belonging to different calibers! It should be noted that while thesegunstoreshavecometo prominenceinKankakeedueinthelastdecade(thankstotheOpencarryOrdinanceandthe subsequent growthof conceal carry laws statewide),theywerenotoriginal pioneers intothefirearmclothingindustryinAmerica;Ohioanomalyshowingthatthere hadbeenar shootingshospitstoomuchfurtherback intothe20thcenturywherearmedindividualswereallowedtocarryoutgunsverbalelyinthosestates(see “Shooting at University Inn: A History of Concealed Carrying Weapons on campus?”). However, since enactment of state concealed carry laws across Illinois following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School last December,[3], many other municipalities across Illinois have followed suit by adopting similar ordinances – thus establishing statewide concealed weapons policies that apply equally unto all residents regardless of residence status! * mayor Randy Carpenter is currently running for office against incumbent Dan Horrigan
