Bullets have been a part of Springfield, Illinois for over 150 years. The town was founded by white farmers in 1827 as a result of the Cherokee-American War. The first bullets were made from lead, but after it became too heavy to be used safely, silver bullets were developed. In 1855, the first government-issued rifle cartridge was created in Springfield with bullet #3. This cartridge was designed to kill deer and other large game. The popularity of this type of ammunition led to the development of more powerful cartridges such as the .30-06 and .50 caliber rounds that are still used today. The city's nickname "The Showplace of the South" is due to its location on both sides of the state line between Illinois and Kentucky. Kankakee, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 73,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Kankakee River forms the city's eastern border and separates it from Lake Michigan to the east and south. The first Europeans to visit what is now Kankakee were French explorers in 1614 who charted its location on their journey from Canada to present-day Milwaukee. Jesuit missionary Pierre Marquette explored the river valley in 1679 while traveling through what is now Kankakee County in search of a route to Superior Lakes. In 1788, General James Sullivan moved his army through this region during his unsuccessful attempt to take over Fort Dearborn on the southern shore of Lake Michigan. In 1802, John Cavanaugh founded a small community called Cedar Rapids (now Cedar Rapids), about 8 miles (13 km) upstream from today's Kankakee River mouth on which he built a log cabin and erected some early lumbering trees. He became known as "Cardenaw" because he had stored goods here for wagon traffic between Rock Island and Prairie du Chien along the Mississippi River prior to its construction by General John Mifflin as part of his Great Western Railroad project in 1854-55. Kankakee increased rapidly due to pioneers arriving for Fillmore’s Kansas Territory assessments in 1836 and following annexation into that territory by Illinois on May 10, 1839; those assessors named county seat “Kankakee” after nearby Cedar Rapids because there were few other villages within reach of central Cass County then beyond Decatur Township adjoining Kaskaskia Township on one side and Rock Island extending northeasterly into Kane County on the other side of said township line – all within Cass Township limits since that territory was organized January 1st next succeeding year under Act of State Legislature ceding it by virtue thereof when Kansas Territory was created out of Missouri Compromise (1820). Settlers soon arrived hereabouts where they cleared land for agriculture or began building homes with large logs brought downriver aboard steamboats either entering or leaving Rock Island Arsenal wharves; many small boat operations continued upriver until around 1860 when navigation improved with locks being constructed downstream at Kimball Locks rendering much needed transportation available without going downriver past Porterville Ferry Landing etc.. With railroads coming ashore starting near Porterville Ferry Landing town center these activities picked up speed again beginning about 1870 otherwise very little changed until World War I when heavy industry took hold driving out most farming families especially among young men who enlisted rather than go off to fight overseas like their fathers had done before them jobs dried up at home so people simply stopped working altogether including such noted local historian Drumm & Hartwig as well as many others whose memories live long after they have gone away from our town site more people died during this war than lived actually making life difficult for everyone involved knowing we would still be alive if not for both wars which happened right smack dab in town center
