Kankakee is a small town in south-central Illinois, United States. The population was 5,549 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kankakee County. The town of Kankakee was founded in 1824 by John Cranch and his brother, Daniel Cranch. The original name for the town was "Creekville". In 1846, the town became part of Reigsburg Township. On May 6, 1957, the townships of Hinsdale and Winnetka were merged into Kankakee County. Kankakee is known as "the peach capital of America" because it produces some of the world's finest produce: peaches, plums, nectarines, apricots and other sweet fruits. The economy for much of the 20th century depended on agriculture; however, since 2000 there has been a growing trend towards professional and business services. Today's culture includes many popular tourist attractions such as several golf courses (including one located in downtown Kankakee), a full-service arena/ Recreational Complex with nine lanes bowling alley and movie theater complex (including an IMAX theater), two shopping malls (one near downtown and one off Interstate 80) as well as numerous restaurants including Granny Smith applesauce company & Illini Gardens salad restaurant

Kankakee, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 25,521 at the 2010 census. Kankakee is located on the north side of the Chicago metropolitan area and is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Drummondville Combined Statistical Area. It began as a small village in 1853 and became one of the largest villages in Cook County when it incorporated as a town on December 12, 1871. In 1901, Kankakee annexed parts of Westchester Township to form its present-day territory. Kankakee first developed around white fur traders who came to this area during the mid-19th century for trade with Native Americans. The first permanent settler in what is now Kankakee was Isaac Best who arrived in 1851 from Michigan Territory. Best built his cabin on an east-west road that still exists today between First and Second Streets near Lake Michigan Boulevard (now Wabash Avenue). A post office called Kankakee was established in 1853, but no mail was ever delivered to it because there wasn't enough space available for postage stamps then. The first store opened in 1854 by John Prentice and his son Edward Prentice at First Street and Milwaukee Road (now Washington Avenue). On December 12,1871, Kankakee incorporation occurred with 27 homes being organized into a borough which had total land area of 565 acres (241 hectares). On November 16, 1889 another annexation occurred when Westchester Township adopted a resolution to become independent from Cook County under the name of "Westchester Township Annexation Committee"). In 1901 when Cook County was created through statehood process Kankakee annexed parts of Westchester Township creating its present territory including most notably Hawthorne Park which lies within Today's Kankakee village limits administratively until 2019 when that park joined forces with neighboring Willard Park creatingToday's Willard Park Community Council District 9A)
The Kankakee community was formed in 1847 when the first white settlers arrived in what is now Kankakee County. The area had been inhabited by the Lenape people for centuries, and the first European to arrive was Nicholas Meyer. In 1847, he and his family purchased 1,500 acres of land on the banks of the Illinois River from a group of Native Americans. The Meyer Family built a log cabin and named it after their father, Nicholas Meyer Sr. The first school in Kankakee County was built in 1851 by Reverend John Fenton and taught grades one through twelve. In 1870, the first Methodist church was built in what is now Kankakee. It served as the center of worship for many years until it burned down in 1865. In 1881, an express wagon road connecting Chicago with St Louis was completed, making Kankakee an important stop for goods moving between these two cities. By 1900, there were over 100 businesses located within a radius of about 10 miles of downtown Kankakee.
