Kankakee, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 487 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County and the home of the Chicago Bears football team. The Kankakee Valley was inhabited by various cultures for thousands of years before European contact. A small village named Kankakee developed on the banks of the river Kankakee in 1795 by Colonel Joseph Warren and his men who were trying to find a route to that new continent from Asia. The area that now includes Kankakee was first settled by Native Americans in 1799 as part of a land grant from General Jonathan Wayne to Captain John Leland. In 1847, when Indiana territory was divided into three parts, Kankakee became part of Illinois; it remained an unincorporated community until 1855, when it incorporated as a town under the name "Kankakee." In 1863, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest made his way through Illinois along what is now I-71 south to Springfield and then eastward across Iowa Territory towards Indianapolis. On November 14 he reached Rock Island Bridge over the Mississippi River just north of Springfield and began his march on Indianapolis. Union troopsaced him there near Cairo Junction and after two days' fighting lost 3200 men (plus Forrest) while sustaining no serious losses themselves; however they did achieve their objective: capturing or destroying much artillery ammunition destined for Confederate forces in Tennessee and Virginia. This battle marked one of only three times in history that Union troops fought hand-to-hand with Confederates (the others being at Pea Ridge on April 9th & 11th 1865). From 1840 until 1850, Kankakee served as capital of Illinois under Governor John Pemberton. From 1870 until 1975, it served as the third largest city in Cook County followingChicago and Chicago Heights. However, with suburbanization throughout Cook County starting in the early 1970s and continued through the 2000s, much of what once constituted downtown Kankakee has now been lost to development or removed for redevelopment into new neighborhoods outside of downtown areas such as West Town Center and South Side Village – two adjacent high-rise developments that are located just north of I-57 off Interstate 65 close to Lake Michigan Boulevard which bisects downtown from east to west; while also including several smaller office buildings located along I-57 corridor opposite Downtown Loop (a major shopping district), also known locally as "The Loop". In spite being surrounded by urban sprawl since then some remnants remain such as small businesses clustered aroundStreetscape stoplight near Northwestern Mutual Tower - another reminder that although some things have changed many residents continue to identify themselves primarily as "Kankakeeans". Today there are numerous cultural attractions within walking distance including: Symphony Auditorium (the world's largest opera house), American Museum Of Natural History (the world's second largest natural history museum), State Fairgrounds (home to more than 30 agricultural exhibits), Edward Jones Dome (formerly known as 'The Dome'), Jordan Park (home to America's first soccer stadium) among others
Kankakee was founded by two brothers, Isaac and Jacob Kankakee in 1810. The town was named after the Kankakee River, which flows through the town. In 1836, the Kankakee-Muncie Railroad was constructed, and it served as a conduit for goods between Kankakee and Muncie. The railroad stopped operations in 1870.
