Kankakee is a town in northern Illinois, United States. The population was 11,711 at the 2010 census. Kankakee is the county seat of Kane County. The community began as a small village on the banks of the Kankakee River and became a city after it was annexed by Chicago in 1871. The name "Kankakee" comes from an Ojibwa word meaning "a place where sweet potatoes are boiled." In 1818, Captain George Stephenson explored what is now Kane County and noted that there were no sweet potatoes growing anywhere near by. He proposed naming the area for General Sir George Armstrong Custer who had died in battle two years earlier while campaigning against Native Americans in Dakota Territory. However, before he could be honored with this title, General Custer's family objected to being associated with such a lowly village on their home territory. The first European to visit what is now Kankakee was Jesuit Father Jacques Marquette who camped here in 1679 during his exploration of Lake Michigan's Upper Peninsula. After returning to France, he reported back about finding rich deposits of copper and other minerals in what is now Kane County but did not settlement until 1790 when French fur traders arrived here looking for land to settle next door to their fur trading posts on the Great Lakes region. A post office called Greenville (later Green Bay) was established at Kankakee Rapids on October 25, 1836, under authority of Act No. 5 of 1835. When Illinois became a state in 1847, Greenville became its capital and remained so until 1907 when Chicago moved its capital westward into DuPage County where it remains today as Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum
