The Wisconsin Central Railroad passed through here on its way to Chicago; Passenger Train No. 1 stopped at this stop on October 9th 1862 while en route from Milwaukee to Rockford; passenger train no 2 followed suit two days later onOctober 11th 1862 (the first time this railroad ever traveled into Illinois). Manufacturing began replacing agriculture as Kankakee's mainstay after rails brought new industries like steel mills and textiles to town during the Progressive Era (1890-1920). By 1920 there were over 130 businesses operating within walking distance of downtown; today only 10 remain open downtown with most situated elsewhere within easy reach via public transportation or highway access

Kankakee is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,815 at the 2010 census. The name means "the place where the Kankakee Creek flows." The first European to visit what would become Kankakee was James Watt in 1779. He and his party of five men explored the area and noted the many waterfalls that flow from the bluff on which Kankakee sits. In 1814, surveyors for John Stephenson's east-west railroad surveyed a route through present day Kankakee Township and named it after General James Kasky who had helped win this portion of the war against Mexico. General John Fenton also surveyed part of what is now Kankakee Township in 1814; however he never built anything there because he died before completion of his project. In 1822, Samuel Flournoy purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) near modern day downtown Kankakee from Nicholas Jourdain for $640 per acre ($2 per hectare). This land became known as Flournoy Park in honor of him. Jourdain sold most of his land to various developers between 1857 and 1861 but some remains are still used today by the town government as open space. A post office called Flournoy was established in 1865, and remained in operation until 1959. From 1871 until 1889, Revkin & Co., merchants and grocery stores located at 200 South Main Street served as mayoralty candidates during Illinois' state presidential election season; however they were never elected due to lack of support from voters. During World War II, local factories produced munitions such as rifles, tanks and machine guns while other industries manufactured aircraft parts or textiles for military use; many people gathered around these plants during wartime when production needed no workers but generated jobs for locals instead. By 1945 only a few residual businesses continued operations following World War II – most closed down within two years due to falling prices for goods imported from abroad or technological advances making exports more expensive than domestic production; nonetheless many residents continue to live close by their businesses and participate actively in community life today thanks to online social media sharing opportunities available today notwithstanding large distances between small towns across America caused by Interstate highways
