Kankakee (formerly Kankakee County) is a town in Illinois, United States. The population was 31,529 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the Ojibwe word kanka-keen meaning "place of great birch trees." The first European to visit what is now Kankakee was French Jesuit Father Jacques Marquette in 1679. He named it after his friend and mentor, Père Jacques Marquette. On October 12, 1795, Kankakee was chartered as a village by the General Assembly of the United States under the name of Graysville. It had a population of 219 residents. George Washington visited Kankakee on March 12, 1800 and pronounced it "a very good place". On December 5, 1838, US Congress passed an act that designated part of present day Kane County as part of Indiana Territory; this caused Kankakee to become part of Illinois. On July 10th 1870 Illinois General Assembly passed an act creating Cook County out of all but 1/4 inch (2 mm) square land grants from various counties in Indiana; this caused all but 2/3rds (27%) of the people living within Kane County to move out and form Chicago Township according to census data from 1880. The remaining 3/4ths (44%) were new arrivals who would later become known as the “Kankeese” or assimilated Kokangas based on their language ability and costume preferences which included wearing white skinned clothing with bluebird feathers attached instead of hairpins or curling irons like other Indians due to cultural influences brought over during American Expansionism). By 1908 there were just 14 people left in Kane County when prohibition changed things again with Chicago annexation gaining city charter status effective January 1st 1909 leading to a decline in population until current numbers are available for1900 Census when only 9 people lived within Kane County because prohibition had ended military service for women outside Chicago between 1871-1920 . After World War I many men returned home from abroad bringing back their skills needed for post-war rebuilding such as electricians and plumbers while others started businesses such as grocery stores . By 1930 there were only 4 residents left in Kane county when prohibition ended military service for women outside Chicago between 1871-1920 which would lead to more social unrest with increasing crime rates leading to its total abolishment on November 30th 1970 making way for present day suburban growth

Kankakee, Illinois is a small town located in the northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois. The population was 8,378 at the 2010 census. Kankakee is the county seat of Kankakee County and home to two universities: Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU-C) and Northern Illinois University Edwardsville (NIU-E). As one of the smallest counties in Illinois, it has only a few thousand residents. The first settler in what would become Kankakee was John Purdy in 1827. He built a log cabin on the banks of Buffalo Creek near present day Mount Pleasant. In 1830, Purdy married Anna Jourdain and together they founded what would become the town of Kankakee. Jourdain had come from Greencastle, Indiana and her husband had arrived from Michigan Territory in 1824. Kankakee was originally named Carbon Hill after General Anthony Wayne's stockade at that location during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). The name change came about because early settlers thought carbonized lime caused green hills when viewed from a distance. The first school in what would become Kankakee opened its doors on November 6, 1855; it was called "Carbon Hill School". It was housed on land donated by John Purdy and his wife Anna Jourdain. The school served as both a primary and secondary school until 1937 when SIU-C became their replacement due to opening nearby at NIU-E four years earlier than planned due to budget cuts within Congressional Republicans' titanic assault against UIUC Chancellor James Moseley's beloved institution which not only destroyed UIUC but also cost taxpayers $10 million--the largest single university investment ever made in Chicago public schools during that time period! In 1966, Carbondale became an independent university with its own chancellor and board of trustees while IUEV lost all state funding following passage of House Bill No. 5951 which reduced tuition for UIUC students pursuing liberal arts degrees by 50%. The town of Kankakee was founded in 1818 by a group of Europeanitives who had come to the area to prospect for land. The first settler, John Doherty, arrived in 1820. By 1830, the town had a population of about 25 people. Kankakee became an important center for trade and transportation in the early 1800s due to its location at the junction of two routes connecting Illinois with Indiana and Michigan. In 1847, Kankakee was chartered as a village and became known as one of the largest villages in Illinois. In 1865, Kankakee was merged with neighboring Village of Winnetka into one municipality. The merger caused some controversy because both towns were considered separate municipalities with their own police departments and fire departments.
