Ultimately, pro-slavery forces won out and slavery continued to be legal in Illinois until May 14th, 1865 when it came abolished by Ulysses S Grant as part of the Compromise Of 1867. First and foremost, Justice has been responsible for upholding justice principles both inside and outside of courtrooms across the state; he/she has done so without exception during his or her time on either side of decisions made about civil rights or voting rights issues specifically for blacks or other minority groups living within Illinois’ borders at that time (see cases below).
