Joliet, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 97,824 as of the 2010 census. Joliet is one of the most heavily populated cities in Cook County and one of the fastest-growing. Joliet was founded on May 12, 1834 by Major John Culbertson and his men as a military outpost on the Chicago River. In 1861 Joliet became an incorporated town after voting with Chicago to secede from the US. The city's motto is "Proudly One Hundred Years" and it has honored that slogan through several ceremonies including opening of the Daley Center for Economic Development in 2002 and its centennial celebration in 2016. The first settlers in what would become Joliet were Dutch farmers who arrived around 1795. They constructed a log cabin on what is now State Street near present day Elmwood Avenue. In 1834, Major John Culbertson established himself as a fur trader at what would later be known as Fort Dearborn across from today's riverbank onChicago's Northwest Side. With this new trade route opened up by Lewis Cass Jr., American traders began to arrive in greater numbers and begin building settlements along the banks of the Chicago River just north of where Joliet would later be founded. It wasn't until November 1, 1835 when Captain George Stephenson erected a wooden dock over which he could transport goods downriver to Mattoon (now part of Aurora) before being unloaded at Dearborn Harbor for sale orexport downriver to Buffalo (now part of Rockford). At this time Joliet consisted of only 20 people: 9 men (Culbertson, Stevenson, Griffin) and 11 women (Catherine Greenleaf Currie; Fannie Bogan; Catharine Briggs; Anna Stiles; Martha Addison; Lucy Goodloe). From there they started clearing land for their farm which included chopping down trees etc... By early winter 1841 they had completed their farm area including constructing 2 barns(one still standing), 4 outhouses(2 still standing), 7 pumpkins grist mill & saw mill & 2 blacksmith shops also 1 smithy(present day Canalview Towers)and built 3 houses: Nicholas Flournoy house #1&2 & Mrs Flournoy’s house #3 which are still standing today! Their families lived here until 1847 when Captn Stephenson moved them back uprivertowherehe had been appointed Deputy Commissioner under Govt Ordinance No 1087 .
