In 1803, David Roode decided to settle in present-day Joliet after hearing about a land grant from General Winfield Scott. After purchasing 2,500 acres (1 km2) from Paul Revere, Roode founded the first post on the Fox River outside present-day Joliet. He named his settlement La Salle because he had heard that La Salle's brother had been killed by French forces during the Seven Years' War. By 1810, La Salle had 12 buildings and 100 residents. By 1830, however, la Salle's population had increased to 200 people and it became an agricultural community producing cornmeal and other goods for local markets. In 1835 Horace Greeley arrived in Illinois as part of a survey team led by Captain Neilson Elliott that was investigating possible locations for new settlements in central Illinois due to increasing tensions between Great Britain and America over slavery issues. When Captain Elliott found out that there were no suitable sites available for habitation near Chicago or any other major city on the continent due to their difficult terrain and lack thereof water access, he recommended that Greeley move his family into what would eventually become Joliet Township on behalf of others who wanted to establish homesin central Illinois but could not find space or money to do so themselves. Greeley initially set up shop at Fort Dearborn north of Chicago until 1840 when he moved southward along Missouri Avenue into what would become current-day Joliet where his tavern became known as The Hennepin House after pioneer Amos Hennepin who also lived nearby on State Street near today's First Baptist Church (now Stritch Park).
