The original town site was located near where present-day downtown Joliet stands today. The first post office in Joliet opened on July 1, 1848. In 1854, Stephenson donated land to form what would become the nucleus of what would become Joliet Township. On November 3, 1881, Joliet became an independent municipality when it adopted a charter from the Cook County Board of Commissioners which granted its own government with its own laws and revenue system within Cook County and outside of any other municipal jurisdiction within Cook County or any other state or federal jurisdiction. On January 1, 1907, Joliet annexed part of neighboring East Aurora as well as portions of Grayslake and Streamwood. On October 15th that year construction began on what would eventually become Northwestern Illinois College (now Northwestern State University). That same year saw the opening of First Chicago National Bank which served as Platteport's first bank on North Dearborn Street in downtown Plainfield before it moved to Niles Avenue later that year. The Northern Indiana Railway proposed building a line through Plainfield but this never came to fruition because platting for such a route across residential neighborhoods was more trouble than it was worth at that time! In 1911-1912 an ice cream factory called "The scoop" operated out of a small shed behind West Side Market in Plainfield until it closed due to high costs associated with maintaining infrastructure necessary for such an operation; however this did not mark the end of enterprise based outfitting stores for Chicagoans during this period! In 1922-1923 Kresge's department store chain decided to open its second location in Plainfield - just down Dearborn Street from First Chicago National Bank - making PlainFIELD one full shopping district! This period marked perhaps Joliets most prolific retail development spearheaded by local businessmen & entrepreneurs who made progressivism & reformism their credo/mission!lol
