Grant became President of the United States and appointed Republican Representative to Congress from IL as Abraham Lincoln's majority whip; John A. McClernand served as Grant's Secretary of War during this time In 1861, following the American Civil War (1861-1865), Joliet became part of Union America under General William Tecumseh Sherman's marches through Illinois unopposed because most residents had sided with their Confederate government (see Battle of Peoria). Sherman's army sacked many homes and businesses before entering into downtown Joliet where he ordered a surrender by force on October 15th 1865 which ended all resistance within that city limits On October 22nd 1865 news reached Chicago that General Andrew Johnson had been elected President over James Buchanan by a narrow margin; upon learning about Johnson's victory over Stanton and Lincoln he immediately issued an order disbanding all military forces within Illinois except for 1 brigade under General George Hays to garrison other states' borders until such time as instructions could be received from Washington "to restore peace and justice throughout these United States". This order caused great outrage throughout Chicagoland due to its provisions for martial law without any Due Process safeguards being put into place; citizens quickly mobilized against Johnson's occupying forces known as "Sherman's Ghost".[1] On November 3rd 1865 word reached Chicago that Fort Dearborn had surrendered at Quincy after eight days戦闘中に、バランスなしに報告されていた将軍が所有する fortだったことを発見しました。This event has come to be known as "the day Abraham Lincoln was assassinated".[2] On December 6th 1865 general Nathan Bedford Forrest surrendered at Springfield resulting in an even more bloodless battle than Fort Dearborn which ended with almost 100% casualty rate for both sides

Joliet, Ill., is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. Joliet was founded in 1837 and named for the French general Jacques-Marie L'Ouverture. Joliet began to grow rapidly after the opening of the Chicago and Northwestern Railway in 1854, and by 1870 had become one of the largest towns in Cook County. The city of Chicago annexed Joliet in 1888. The first post office in Joliet was established on July 12, 1837; it closed on December 31, 1840. The current post office building was built in 1908 and is located at 4100 South Pulaski Road. In 1837, General James Fenton commanded an army that invaded Illinois from Kentucky to besiege Springfield. He reached Joliet on November 25th after marching 318 miles (500 kilometers). On December 6th he arrived at what is now the Illinois State Capitol Complex where he ordered his forces to encamp for Christmas dinner with General John Prentiss commanding Rifles Regiment #1 (now part of First Infantry Regiment) attached under him as rear guard General Fenton's orders were not followed as they were eaten by Indians that night instead of being distributed among troops as planned A plaque dedication tells this story: "Forty-eight years ago this day General James Fenton marched into our city from Kentucky to besiege Springfield - but his orders were not carried out! This plaque dedicated to those who suffered for their countryman today." Fenton's men camped near present day Pulaski Road and Skokie Boulevard until January 7th when they started their march back home which took them through present day Lombard Street into downtown Joliet where they stopped at State House before continuing up North Broadway towards Dearborn Street where they surrendered on January 8th . In total over 350 soldiers lost their lives during this engagement including many high ranking officers such as John Prentiss who would go on to command Third Infantry Regiment later that year The Fort Dearborn Post Office opened October 14th 1840 and served until May 15th 1861 when it became known as Fort Wayne Post Office because HarbisonPostmaster general moved there from Hendersonville Tennessee April 15th 1861 with all mail being sent via wagons across state line
