In 1877, a small company called Winchester Ammunition was founded in Joliet by George Wickersham and James A. Fitzpatrick. The company became one of the most influential in ammunition history. Winchester Ammunition's products were used in many famous battles such as Gettysburg and Vicksburg. In 1933, Winchester Ammunition merged with Remington Arms Company to form Remington-Winchester Corporation. This company continued to produce ammunition until it was sold to Brownells Incorporated in 1976. Today, Remington-Winchester Corporation produces a wide variety of ammo products including hunting rounds, pistols and rifles. The company also manufactures reloading supplies and accessories for the firearms market.

Joliet, Illinois is a city in the United States. The population was 41,611 at the 2010 census. Joliet is located in northwestern Cook County. The first permanent settler in what is now Joliet was John Hennepin, who arrived on October 17, 1836 and named his land "Hennepin Township," after himself and General Andrew Jackson. Hennepin's heirs sold the township to Nicholas Palatine on November 9, 1841. On December 21, 1846, Joliet was incorporated as a village by vote of its citizens. In 1865, when Illinois became a state within the Union, Joliet became part of Rockford County. In 1906 it became one of the twenty-five municipalities that were merged into Chicago; however it remained an independent municipality until January 1st of 1945 when it joined with other municipalities forming the City of Chicago under then-Mayor Edward J. Kelly's leadership. As part of this municipal merger process, Joliet lost some of its commercial and industrial areas to neighboring neighborhoods such as South Side (now West Side) and North Side (now East Side). On July 15th 1978 fire burned through parts of downtown Joliet destroying over 500 businesses including many small stores which had been key economic engines for much of the community during its early years before gentrification began to take hold throughout most area starting around 2001 or thereabouts culminating in 2007 with demolition/ gentrification complete across all major business districts save for one remaining district - Namely: Downtown - which has seen some limited redevelopment since that time despite efforts by various organizations like Park District et al attempts to maintain some character & charm unique to that area despite heavy development pressures

Joliet is home to the Joliet Catholic School District and two other public schools. The Joliet Arsenal Ammunition Plant was founded in 1873 by Adolphus Greeley and became one of the largest artillery manufacturers in America. In 1907-1908, Holy Cross College (now Notre Dame University) moved from its original location on State Street in downtown Joliet to what is now Adams County Courthouse Square. The plant closed in 1968 but left a lasting legacy on the community with its retail store, food processing facilities, and industrial park that continues to be used today as an agricultural research center. The history of Joliet goes back to 1837 when surveyors discovered a site for a new village at the junction of four rivers: the Rock River, Calumet River, Ottawa River and White River. The area had been inhabited by Native Americans for many centuries before European settlers arrived. In 1839, General Anthony Wayne organized a force under Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Jourdan to explore land grants near present-day Carbondale so that soldiers could not be deployed unnecessarily against Native American tribes during the Indiana Expedition of 1840-1841. Afterward, General Wayne granted three townships – Niles Township (northwest corner of present day Joliet), Plainfield Township (southwest corner), and old Dutchtown Township (east corner) – containing 1/2 square mile each unto Elisha Gray Lewis for settlement as part of hiswing Indian Territory acquired from Miami Confederacy during Black Hawk War (1846). On October 8th 1847 Lewis received news that he had been chosen as owner and headman of 17 miles long stretch lying east side Of Chicago river known as “Wabash” Lands granted him by United States government including 4 sections or parcel number 527 CR 7 6 2 W which included east half acre Block #532 Surveyed by John Saginaw who offered $5 for it On November 3rd 1847 Lewis applied for incorporation with name “Joliot” but no action was taken until February 24th 1850 when Henry Dearborn announced at large meeting convened at both Cook County Courthouse & Masonic Hall that all unincorporated areas within Cook county should form separate Townships with same boundaries & vote on incorporations proposal & if approved all residents therein were to become citizens thereof effective May 1st 1850 Dearborn then adjourned meeting after giving notice that duelling parties having broken up following initial balloting resulted in majority beingPresent insteadof Corporation formed In December 1853 James Paulding donated 640 acres northwest of present day Jolient along Rock Island Railroad tracks just south of Van Buren Road to promote rapid commercial development thereon behalf of himself & associates Peter Kappanen [Kapp] & others residing thereon . . . At this time there were only about 40 people living in what is now eastern Quincy Township north ot Warsaw Rd., west ot Rensselaer Dr., east ot Galesburg Rd.,& south ot Streator Rd., while some lived scattered around farms northeast ol Lafayette Ave.. On January 10th 1860 Paulding sold additional lands totaling 1/4 square mile within present day Kaneohe City Limits extending into western Kaukauna township In 1862 Paulding sold another 640 acres northwest oI present day Eastern Quincy Township along Racine Railway tracks just south oI Western Polish Road This land would later become partof eastern Kaneohe City limits
The Joliet area was first settled by the Lenape Native Americans in 1679. The area became a part of the United States in 1795. The Joliet Canal was built in 1814 and brought traffic to the area. In 1849, Joliet was annexed by Chicago.
