In 1912, the Western Shooting Range was opened and it was called the Jacksonville Rifle & Pistol Club. In 1916, the Jacksonville Gun Club was founded and it became known as the Jacksonville Sportsmen’s Club. In 1922, the Jackson Rifle & Pistol Club moved to their present location on University Avenue in Jacksonville. The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) donated their facility to the Jaguars in 1957 and they have been using it ever since.

In 1865 when Confederate General Robert Ewell's army invaded Illinois, he made his headquarters at Jacksonville and ordered all black men within gunshot distance to leave their homes or face military service unless they joined him as Confederate officers or soldiers under terms set by Union General Ulysses S. Grant which did not include involuntary servitude within African American households nor access to education or employment opportunities outside of their families estates until after Reconstruction Era ended more than 60 years later with passage of The Civil Rights Act Of 1964 By The United States Congress

This allowed for rapid economic development which continues today with several high-rise buildings in downtown Jacksonville still standing today such as the old State Capitol Building and First National Bank building which were built during World War II as part of military housing developments authorized pursuant to Executive Order 9066

Jacksonville, Illinois was founded in 1818 by General James K. Polk and Mayor John Todd. The city became a county seat in 1836. In 1846, the Illiniwek tribe ceded land to Jacksonville for their college campus. The school was initially called "The University of Illinois."
