In 1861, Jacksonville was the first city in Illinois to be admitted to the Union as a state. The city rapidly grew and by 1870 it had over 30,000 residents. In 1887 Jacksonville became one of the five cities that formed Chicago's Metropole City District. The district included much of the northwest Side of Chicago and its growth continued until the late 1930s when suburbanization began in Chicagoland and eventually overwhelmed downtown Chicago.
