Jacksonville, Illinois is a city located in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 41,564 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of DuPage County and home to the University of Illinois at Jacksonville. Jacksonville is also known for its shipbuilding industry and for its annual Navy-Marine Corps ball game, which has been played since 1892. The first humans to live in Jacksonville were Native American who called it Yanktona Township. The first European colonists arrived in 1672 when they founded a trading post on the west bank of the Chicago River. In 1793, a group led by Captain John Callahan explored what is now DuPage County and discovered a “calcareous ground” (today’sJacksonville) with “prime sites for building ships” within 10 miles (16 km). After some debate among their leaders as to whether or not to establish this new township – name given by Captain Callahan – they voted to do so and named it after General Anthony Wayne, commander of forces against France during the French–American War (1794-1801). On November 15, 1800, Jacksonville was formally laid out with lots measuring oneacre each by twoand onehalfacres (.85 ha). During Jacksonvillians' early days there was little economic development because there was no river or harbor available for shipping goods from what are todayDu Page County and other neighboring counties such as Cook County into central Illinois. The only way that goods could be transported from these areas was via wagon wheels overland which took weeks or even months due to travel distances and difficult terrain through rugged country that included bluffs overlooking large rivers and lakes. However progress did occur during this time as entrepreneurs began thinking outside the box when it came to shipping goods; one such entrepreneur was Jens Jensen who built a wharf on an existing bend in the Chicago River just upstream from present day State Road 54 where he stored his cargo until needed based on prevailing winds patterns that would bring his vessels upriver every six weeks). This innovative business venture lead to Jensen becoming known as "theFather of Shipping." In 1806 Clay Pye established himself as a carpenter/builder in Jacksonville with his brother Daniel Pye .
