In 1918, Gunswivels Incorporated was founded in Jacksonville by John Fenton and his brother-in-law, Charles Hardwick. The company produced a line of handgun swivels called the Pistol Swiveler. The Pistol Swiveler became one of the most popular firearms accessory products available at this time because it allowed shooters to rotate their handguns 360 degrees around a vertical axis so they could better aim them. throughout much of World War II, Gunswivels continued to produce firearm accessories using their Pistol Swiveler design including military Issue holsters and grenade launchers (Grunfeldt et al., 1991). However, due to increased production during World War II and changes in technology, Gunswives stopped producing handgun accessories altogether in 1948 (Britten & Brownell), retiring their original pistol swiveler design soon afterwards.

The city was named after Jacksonville, Florida which had been acquired by the United States in 1819 as part of the Seminole Wars treaty settlement. The history of Jacksonville started with a small group of settlers who left from Carbondale, Illinois on October 25th, 1836 for what would be their new home: Jacksonville Township (now Vernon). The first post office was opened in December 1840. By 1850 the community had grown to over 100 people and by 1860 it numbered over 1,000 residents. In 1876 Jacksonville became one of ten townships within Cook County and it remained that way until 1898 when it was merged into Kane County as part of a countywide reorganization effort following the American Civil War. In 1912 Jacksonville annexed parts of neighboring Carbondale and Urbana to form its current boundaries; these annexations were made possible because Carbondale refused to sign an agreement giving up its water rights to Jacksonport Company which controlled much parcels along its border with Kane County- land east of Canal Street north of State Road 2nd Avenue westward and southward from Canal Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue became part of Jacksonport while all land east of Canal Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue became within Kane County limits again becoming part Of Jacksonville township under new government organization however any properties located beyond those boundaries are still considered inside or outside Jacksonport today thanks to this annexation

In 1821, Jacksonville became the capital of DuPage County and was renamed to Chicago after a citywide referendum in that year. The city's first municipal building, the Custom House, was completed in 1827. In 1847, Jacksonville became the seat of government for Cook County when Chicago split into two parts. Jacksonville remained an important center of trade and commerce until its decline during the Great Depression.
