Jacksonville, Illinois (often called Jacksonville, IL) is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat of DuPage County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,816. The city is located on Chicago's north side and has a metropolitan area greater than that of Chicago and its surrounding counties. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is based in Jacksonville. The first European to visit what is now Jacksonville was Étienne de La Salle on his way from Paris to Kaskaskia in 1701–02. He named it after François Xavier Jourdain, captain general of Canada under Louis XIV., who had visited him two years earlier near Joliette on the Mississippi River. De La Salle built Fort Dearborn for French fur traders in 1753 as part of their efforts to open up new territory along the Great Lakes region. In 1818, when Jackson County was created from parts of DuPage and Kane Counties, Jacksonville became its county seat; it remained so until 1907 when Champaign County was organized out of portions of DuPage and Kane Counties also. In 1868, a group led by John Hickey platted what would become downtown Jacksonville with two blocks north of present day State Street; this group included future Mayor John Fenton and Drury brothers Elias Acheson (founder/president/chief executive officer (CEO)of First National City Bank), Edwin Drake (founder/ceoof Third National Bank), Wm Crainer (owner/manager/president emeritusof Wabash Valley Railroad), James Goudreau (a native son turned immigrant who came overland from Quebec as an eighty-year-old man in 1847),and others including Jno[pher] Smeaton(CFO & treasurerOf Merchants Trust Company). Jacksonville grew rapidly during the late 1800s due to railroad development; by 1905 there were more than 50 railways operating through town with a combined trackage length exceeding 6 miles! shipyards soon followed as both local Shipbuilding Company and Northern Star Shipbuilding constructed numerous vessels used by both internal trade and foreign navies during World War I including: USS "Monitor" (1914); USS "Titanic" (1915); USS "Lilliput" (1921); USS "Iowa" (1923); USS "Wisconsin"; USNS "Harpoon" CBN 1921-1967) In 1906 Jacksonville lost its charter as an independent city because it failed to meet eligibility requirements set forth by then Governor George Creighton; instead it became part as onehalf or joint jurisdiction with Champaign County with voting rights being shared equally between those jurisdictions but separate police departments operated within each jurisdiction respectively - still yet an arrangement which persists today! In 1933's annexation into Champaign County by Chicago made all changes necessary for full operation within that newly formed county without involving any other municipalities save for annexation applications received from neighboring townships - much like our current situation wherein all changes resulting from Alex Seitz' appointment as Mayor last year have been submitted directly to him rather then through City Council... currently we have 5 members elected at large via cumulative vote thru wards rather then individual election...we are currently waiting on completion paperwork for recognition pursuant to Ordinance No 7252 passed last year
