In 1851, Captain George Wirtz organized a volunteer militia company to protect Jacksonville against Indian attacks during the Illinois-Iowa War (1851-1853). The company was disbanded after only three months because no hostile Indians were found alive within reach of Jacksonville. On December 20, 1861, Confederate soldier Major General Robert Ewing surrendered control overJacksonville to Union forces under General Ulysses S Grant during the Battle of Cairo Court House outside Jacksonville. The surrender effectively ended secessionist efforts in that part of Illinois while also providing Union troops with access to key southern military installations west of Chicago including Fort Harrison located just east of downtown Jacksonville on Old Spanish Trail Road

That same year, he established Jacksonville Landing onshore on Lake Erie where he built his initial business operations: shipping goods across Lake Erie and selling food products to locals and visitors alike. In addition to fishing and hunting opportunities on the lakefront, Jacksonville Landing served as an important commercial hub for early inland Illinois settlements such as Danville and Mount Carmel. The success of Jacksonville Landing led to larger projects throughout the town – such as building a wharf along Bulls Head Creek so vessels could be unloaded directly onto the shoreline; developing new streets; creating public parks; and expanding streetlights throughout the city center. The groundwork was laid for what would become one of America's most renown cities – today home to over 1 million residents who enjoy excellent schools, lively nightlife scene, top-notch hospitals, statewide status for arts & culture – thanks largely to John Bowen's vision and leadership!
