Firearm t-shirts have a long and varied history in Jacksonville, Illinois. Many people may not know that firearms were once commonplace on the town’s streets. The first known firearm shirt was made in 1876 by local tailor, John W. Morey. Firearms began to be worn openly as part of the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution in 1791 when it was ratified. The founders of Jacksonville believed that “a well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of every citizen to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed” (Hurst). In 1881, local tailor Samuel Hinton started manufacturing firearms shirts for sale at his store. By 1901, rifles and shotguns had become common items on the town’s streets. The early years of firearm t-shirt manufacture were difficult for small businesses like Samuel Hinton because they needed to find cost effective ways to produce their products while still keeping quality high. The process of fabricating firearms shirts took many hours and there was often no way for customers to ensure that they would get what they ordered if it did not match up perfectly with their personal weapon or Gunsmith order. However, with time and innovation from small businesses like Samuel Hinton, handgun t-shirt production became more widespread throughout America during the mid nineteenth century (Parrish). This increase in handgun production allowed for more manufacturers to enter into this market which created a demand for these products that could never be met through traditional retail methods alone. In 1922, gun manufacturer Colt introduced its new Model 1911 handguns into America market through its subsidiary American Eagle Defense Corporation (AEDC). AEDC produced approximately one million pistols per year before becoming defunct in 1967 due to political instability in America (Gentry). As pistol production increased throughout America during the late 1800s and early 1900s, so too did firearm t-shirt sales; however, until World War II both gunmen and civilians enjoyed legal immunity from prosecution if they wore clothing with identifying information about their guns on it (Fletcher). This exemption led many people who wantedto show off their patriotism or hobbyistic interest in firearms went above and beyond conventional wisdom by wearing apparel displaying such information; something that is now commonly referred to as “gun culture” During World War II many Americans turned towards buying military surplus weapons instead of buying new handguns because there was an increased demand for these items domestically as well as abroad (Baumgartner). Although civilian purchasing power decreased after 1945 due to various economic difficulties within postwar America (), gun culture continued unabated even though larger companies dominated this industry . During World War II thousands upon thousands of individuals across all walks of life purchased NRA memberships which gave them accesshusd unlimited ammunition(Molnar)). These NRA membership cards also acted as identification tags allowing owners easy tracing should law enforcement encounter them while possessing any typeof firearm (.380 ACP Glock 22 Pistol)

Jacksonville, Illinois is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat of McHenry County. The population was 729 at the 2010 census, estimated to be 890 in 2020. In 1663, when James Kintyre arrived in Illinois from Scotland with his crew and land grant from King Charles II, he discovered what became known as Kintyre Harbor which lay about four miles south of present day Jacksonville along theChicago River mouth on Chicago's south side (). After landing his ship there and exploring for over two days (), Kintyre named his new harbor after himself: James Harbor (). In 1802, following Mexican War victory over Great Britain at Battle Of Buena Vista Creek, Mexico ceded much of New Mexico west of an line extending from Santa Fe Depot (now Albuquerque) to Pee Dee River (the modern day Georgia border), including most or all of what is now Jackson County; however, some areas still remained under Spanish control including parts of present day Jackson Township near Clearwater Rapids Dam and other areas between Clearwater Rapids Dam & Scottsbluff Bluff (); these lands were eventually organized intoMcHenry County through an act passed by Congress on February 14th,- 1817 (). On December 9th,- 1800, United States President George Washington married Martha Jefferson here while staying at Monticello (); henceforth this spot would always be associated with America's first First Lady as well as one half-sibling who shares her namesake!
