In 1911, American Firearms Manufacturing Company produced an airgun that became known as the “Jacksonville Gun”. It consisted of a semiautomatic rifle with a magazine that held five rounds and an automatic pistol with six rounds that could be fired one at a time or in quick succession. In 1861 during American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered his cavalrymen to burn down all bridges in northeastern Illinois that facilitated Union army supplies moving into northern Illinois through Kentucky and Tennessee; this event is commonly referred to as "The Battle of Jackson". When Union troops arrived in time to stop Ewell's plan they discovered that most of the bridges had been destroyed; however several small crossings still remained functional including that over the Mississippi River just south of Jackson City Limits today known as State Street Bridge #1 . Aftermath of battle led many veterans seeking refuge within Jackson City Limits where they built log cabins until finally finding permanent dwellings elsewhere around 1870 or so when most veterans left for good due to economic reasons associated with then new western region being opened up by railroads etc.. One such veteran Lamar Hunt who also resided withinJacksonCityLimitsand later played an important roleinbuildingthe economyof Chicago began developing some real estate interests there following his return home late 1800’s ....... Jacksonville, Illinois was first settled in 1837 by Jeremiah Dixon and his family. The town was named after Jacksonville, Florida which was then a Seminole Indian territory. In 1856 the town became part of the Stephenson County, Illinois township. On January 1, 1865, Jacksonville became a city under the name of Jacksonville, IL. The population of Jacksonville reached 713 in 1870 and it grew to over 2,000 by 1890. The city experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century thanks to its manufacturing base and its location on the Mississippi River. During this time the city also gained notoriety for its prohibition movement which helped contribute to its nickname "The Drinking City." In 1929 Jacksonville lost its status as a city and reverted back to Stephenson County form with a population of just 558 residents. By 1940 Jacksonville's population had decreased to 607 residents while its manufacturing base had all but disappeared. However, during World War II Jacksonville played an important role in wartime production as it was home to several aircraft plants including P-39 Airacobra fighter planes and B-24 Liberator bombers. Following the war Jaguars experienced another significant growth period with their populations reaching 3,827 by 1960 before decreasing again throughout the 1970s and 1980s due to multiple economic challenges including budget cuts and increased competition from other communities in nearby DuPage County.

Jacksonville, Illinois was founded in 1833 by George Washington Carver. The city is named after the Army general who led the American military expedition that burned Jacksonville in 1815.
