Huntley is a small town in Fulton County, Illinois, United States. The population was 551 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community began as a farming village in 1871 and became a state-chartered city in 1959. Huntley is named after General James Pemberton Hunt, an American Cavalry general who fought in the Mexican–American War and the American Civil War. Huntley was founded by pioneer farmers on the east side of the Illini River about two miles south of present-day downtown Huntley. They called their settlement "Hutcheson's Landing." In 1871, General James Pemberton Hunt purchased land here from George Hutcheson for $1,000 cash; he had come to this area from Wabash County, Indiana to help lead Union troops against Mexico during the American Civil War. The first post office was established in 1872; it was renamed "Huntley" in honor of General Hunt. In 1898, Huntley became one of thirty-six townships within Illinois organized as part of that state's western division under Act 4 of Ulysses S. Grant's Antiquities Act; it remains an unincorporated community today. In 1909, Mayor John Fenton Lewis proposed that Huntley become a state-chartered city; this proposal won approval from the Illinois General Assembly but failed to receive enough support from residents to pass through its committee stage before being shelved indefinitely due to lack of funding. On January 1, 1959, with the passage of State Question No. 6 (approved by voters), Huntley became one of twenty-four cities within Illinois designated as "state cities." Today, Huntsville Park borders both sides of Main Street while Science World & Aquarium lies just beyond Hubbard Road on the east side - making it one continuous urbanscape with no breaks or boundaries between neighborhoods or schools

Huntley is known for its history and landmarks, including the Huntley House and the Huntley Creek Dam. The first permanent settler in Huntley was James Matson in 1819. The town was named after Captain George H. Hunt of the Ulysses S. Grant Expedition in 1852-53. The original millrace ran through the town and provided water to many homes and businesses until it was replaced by a canal in 1897. In 1881, John Witherspoon built a home on what is now North Main Street in Huntley which still stands today as one of the most notable homes in town. Witherspoon had beenliving in Illinois since 1800s when he settled near Carbondale, IL along with his brother Solomon Witherspoon and cousin Nathanial Potterty from England). He also founded two other villages: Burlington (1851) and La Grange (1868). In 1886 he donated land to build what would become Huntley Creek Dam which forms part of the current community boundaries
The original town of Huntley was platted in 1836 by James H. Hunt, a circuit court judge from the neighboring village of Carbondale. The name is derived from an early Indian word meaning "the place where the deer are." In 1854, Huntley was renamed after General John A. Hunt, commander of the Union forces during the American Civil War. The town became a center for agriculture and commerce, with a sawmill, grist mill, flour mill, bakery and several stores located there. Huntley also grew into a small community with a population of around 100 people in 1860. However, its growth slowed in the late 19th century as automobiles became more popular and transportation options improved. By 1920, only 10 people lived in Huntley; its economy had transitioned to that of farming and light manufacturing. Huntley experienced another renaissance beginning in the mid-20th century as it became known for its art scene. Many local artists began to specialize in painting and sculpture during this time; such as local sculptor Don Kaylor and painter Norma Lasker-Harrison. In recent years however, the town's population has declined again due to loss of jobs in nearby industries such as manufacturing and health care services. As of 2010, there were only 6 residents living within walking distance of their downtown business district; all but one of these residents are retirees or those who commute out to work elsewhere
