Huntley is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,865 at the 2000 census. Huntley is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. It is located about 20 miles (32 km) south-southeast of Chicago and 25 miles (40 km) north-northwest of Springfield. Huntley was founded in 1835 by George Washington Hunt and his brother Samuel Hunt as a small community on the banks of the Kankakee River. In 1851, George W. Hunt purchased land east of where he had first settled and named it after him, Huntley Township being formed from portions of that purchase. In 1870, John Prentice bought some additional land east of Huntley Township and again named it after himself, this time Pomfret Township. The township was organized as a village in 1893 under the name Parkerville after Anthony Parkerville, its first mayor. He sold all but one acre (0 hectares) to the City of Springfield for $5,000 in 1902; however most of Parkerville's remaining land became incorporated into Townsite Road when Parkerville merged with other municipalities within Springfield during that same year. The Village Hall and School were built in 1907 by contractor Elisha Sennett & Son; they are currently operated as part of Box Elder Elementary School district #1 which also includes nearby towns Box Elder and Lebanon before these two villages amalgamated to form Huntsville in 2018 In 1912 an addition to what would become known as Townsite Road leading west from Main Street resulted when an assessment plat for that road was filed with Cook County Recorders office incorrectly showing only East Side Road instead as its course; accordingly East Side Road was extended west from Main Street becoming what is now known as Townsite Drive In 1916 an addition to main Avenue east from there resulted when an assessment plat for off main Avenue Bridge No 7 which crossed Kankakee River at what is now North Main Street also mistakenly showed only South side Boulevard instead as its course; accordingly South side Boulevard was extended east from main Avenue becoming what is now known as East side Avenue . [At this juncture North Main Street changed names back to Streets] On July 1st 1922 "Huntley Post Office" opened operation following merger between "Postmaster General's Department" - established 1879 - post office services offered through enlarged Elmira Public Library which opened May 8th 1922 inside old Masonic Temple on original site vacated by gunnery range destroyed while under construction adjacent to current venue
