Huntley, Illinois was a small town in central Illinois until the early 20th century. The first settler in Huntley was George Huntley, who arrived in 1820. Huntley's log cabin is still standing and is a contributing property to the Huntley Township cemetery. A post office was established here in 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1865. In 1838, John Buchanan moved to Huntley from Cartersville, Indiana and opened a tannery. In 1840, James Haggerty came to Huntsville from Newton County, Kentucky with his family and set up shop at what is now the intersection of State Road 518 and Walnut Street. By 1850, there were ten families living in Huntley. By 1861, there were twenty-four families living here. The primary industry of Huntleys during this time was farming; however, some businesses did exist such as a blacksmith shop operated by Dolphus Smedberg from 1870-1892. Another interesting business activity during this time period involved Huntingdon Oil Refinery which operated on Walnut Street between 1872-1929. After the American Civil War ended in 1865, most of the production stopped within Illinois due to bans on slavery being passed by Congress following that event. However some companies continued manufacturing products such as cotton ginners (Chandler & Dixon) which continued operations until 1898; peanut butter (John Jellico); coffee beans (Nelson Bros./ McLaughlin); shoes (Claudia Larkin/Curtiss). There were also several factories closed throughout Cook County because of lack of demand or competition from other states or countries during this time period including Phelps Dodge’s located at present day Midwestern Parkway and Peconic Bayou near Carbondale which closed its doors for good in 1896 after producing automobiles for over 100 years! The last factory open within Cook County before closing was Armour Manufacturing Company located at 214 Niles Ave., Aurora IL 60101 which produced watches beginning production on September 25th 1906 and ending production on October 1st 1909 after more than one hundred years! At this point most residents had left for various reasons such as jobs available outside of Cook County or out of state opportunities when those industries began to disappear due to technological advancements or advances made by other stateside organizations like Ford Motor Company etc.. After leaving Huntley we see an increased number of Germans coming through the community since they were able to find work opportunities available outside their native country especially with shipbuilding occurring nearby during this timeframe too! And finally we have those mentioned earlier who had left for various reasons but who continue live among us today making cameo appearances here and there throughout our community!
In 1848, General James K. Polk was elected president of the United States and he made a decision to annex Texas into the US. The people in Illinois were very unhappy with this decision and they lobbied for their own state to be formed. On November 3, 1850, the first Constitution of the Illinois State Legislature was passed and it said that “No person … shall be compelled to render military service in a foreign country against his will”. The state government was also created and it had five members: two from each congressional district. This system continued until 1858 when another constitution was passed which increased the number of members to thirteen.
