Huntley is a small town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Huntley is known for its apple orchards and its annual Apple Festival which attracts over 100,000 people each year. The first settler in Huntley was Isaac Hunt who arrived in 1814. In 1825, John Hays bought land from Isaac and named it after himself - Haysburg Township. A post office was established in 1827 and remained in operation until 1903. In 1854, James Witherspoon purchased land from George Sells which included what is now Huntley Village; he renamed it Wetherspoon Township. The first school building was built here in 1865; it burned down in 1902 but was rebuilt and became the present Methodist Church which still stands today. In 1916, when Cook County was organized, Huntley became one of its original townships; however, it reverted to McHenry County on April 20th of that year due to lack of population growth within Cook County while other municipalities increased their populations rapidly such as Elmhurst (1922), Aurora (1927), Oak Park (1928), Plainfield (1929) and Western Springs (1930). This change had an impact onresidential development as most businesses located within the larger municipalities closed down while those located outside the county continued to grow at a faster pace than the local community-the result being many small businesses closing up shop altogether rather than joining new companies that had mushroomed since Cook County’s incorporation into national jurisdiction
