Huntley, Illinois is a small town located in West Central Illinois. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Huntley is one of the oldest towns in the area and has been around since 1827. Huntley is also home to one of the first gun shops in America which opened its doors in 1853. In addition to its gun shop, Huntley also had a post office from 1867-1968 and a school from 1865-1975. There are several interesting things about Huntley's history that make it an interesting place to visit. One such thing is that it was once home to two of the most famous law enforcement officers in the United States – Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer and Deputy Sheriff Edward “Dutch” Van Zandt. These two men were responsible for policing much of eastern Illinois during the early 1800s and their careers have left their mark on Huntley as well as on American society at large. Additionally, both men are buried here in Elmwood Cemetery. Another interesting fact about Huntley's history comes from its connection with holster technology. It was here that inventor John Brown patented his improvements to holster design which would eventually lead to today's firearms being worn openly across America!

Huntley was founded in 1847 by George Washington Hunt and his family. The first post office opened in 1851. Huntley was named for George Washington Hunt, Sr., a surveyor who had moved to Illinois from Maryland in 1826. Huntley is located at (40.824694, -87.925381). It has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,715 people, 598 households, and 439 families residing in the village. The population density was 623 people per square mile (216/km²). There were 693 housing units at an average density of 254 per square mile (99/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 98% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 2% Asian; 0% from other races; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3%. Huntley, Illinois is a town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,893 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Huntley was founded in 1871 by John W. Hunt and his wife Sophronia Hemenway Hunt as a small village on the banks of the Fox River. In 1912, it became a city and has since grown to become one of the most populous communities in McHenry County. The first settler to arrive in what is now Huntley was John W. Hunt who built a cabin on what is now Main Street in 1871. He named his new settlement after his brother-in-law Samuel Hemenway who had moved from Holland with his family two years earlier and settled near Elmira, New York. By 1872, Huntley had developed into a small village with several stores and homes clustered around Main Street where people gathered for picnics or Bible studies during summertime. As time passed, more settlers arrived and by 1880 there were 12 businesses in town including three carpentershops and six shops run by farmers and mechanics. In 1912 when City Hall was built on current day 2nd Street west of MainStreet (now Maple), Mayor George Prentice called for incorporation of all unincorporated areas east of Cook Road which included much of what is now Huntley Township including parts that are today Deerfield Township and North Aurora Township (the latter being formed from portions of South Aurora Township). After much debate by the Town Council over whether or not to incorporation, it was accepted unanimously on November 3rd 1912 becomingHuntley Municipal Corporation with its own mayor/council/city hall/fire department etc., all under one roof! In 1924 when Northwestern Mutual Insurance Company established their headquarters south side between State & Quincy Streets they began construction on what would become their future building which still stands today across from City Hall – home to Northwest Mutual until 2001 when they relocated to One Commerce Drive within Chicago’s Loop area Huntleys growth continued through World War II as many workers came to work at GM plants along I-94 in neighboring Mundelein while other townsfolk took up farming or started small businesses such as an auto dealership or grocery store; some even remaining rural until well into the 21st century! In 1960 when Interstate 94 shifted its path coming down Normal Avenue just north of downtown causing serious damage to both buildings as well as surrounding farms & residences; Mayor Harry Senter organized residents into groups led by clergymen (& later scientists) concerned about possible loss of life if this caused too large an impact on downtown business districts; these men met monthly throughout the year prior to making recommendations concerning how repairs could be made without incurring prohibitive costs & ultimately resulting in I-94 being closed off temporarily while corrective measures were taken
