It became a village on February 14, 1850. On November 15, 1854 it became an incorporated town under the name of Huntley when all other towns in McLean County were made so by an act of the legislature. The first post office in Huntley was established on March 10, 1857; it was renamed Elgin on June 1st of that year. On December 6th of that year the first school opened in Huntley with Mrs Anna Ayer as teacher and six pupils from Elgin attendance followed on January 25th 1860 On May 12th 1861 Bela Huntey arrived from Hungary to found what would become Huntey’s grain elevator which led to Huntleys famous grain trade which continues today There have been many changes over time to how things work here like becoming an online shopping center with AmazonBasics and Sears being added but still mostly dedicated to agriculture including corn ethanol production

Huntley was named after David Hunt who donated land to the community in 1868. Huntley first appeared on maps in 1836 when James Stephenson sold his east of Springfield tract to John Hickey for $1. It was not until 1847 that the name "Huntley" appears as an entity on a map with a post office at its present location. According to one source, it may have been given its current name by John Riddle when he moved from nearby Decatur to Huntley in 1851. The first settler in what would become Huntley was David Hunt who donated land to the community in 1868 and named it after him. At first, only men were allowed to own land here and various mills were built around the early years of the town's existence; however, women soon began working alongside their husbands and are often remembered as founding members of this important aspect of Huntley history. In 1886, Mrs. Sarah Etheredge purchased 1/2 interest in The Herald newspaper from her husband Elijah Etheredge which made her one of the original incorporators of this paper company which later became known as The Chicago Tribune Company Limited Partnership (CTPL). Today, many things that make up earlytown life still remain today- such as pioneer birthday parties or dances held at local churches on Pioneer Day every year! One highlight during each season usually features three or four items chosen by committee from all aspects of pioneer culture- including exhibits brought back by recent visitors from out-of-town! Additionally there are several heritage walks located throughout town highlighting some aspect of pioneer life including barnraising and other early events connected with our nation's independence!
