Huntley is a small city in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of McLean County and home to the Huntley Air Force Base. The community was founded in 1853 by John A. Hunt and his family following their purchase of land west of Chicago. When the railroad came through Huntley in 1858, it shortened its name to Huntley after John A.'s father-in-law, James Hines. The original townsite included only a few houses and a post office building. In 1865, Elisha Wigglesworth donated land east of downtown for a new town square that would include stores and residences. By 1870, Huntley had five churches and an academy. In 1898, when McLean County was organized into three townships (Huntley Township on the north side of Cook River; two others on each side of the river; La Salle Township on the south side), Huntsley became one of those townships. In 1939, Indianola Company founder Orville Sprague donated $10,000 to help build what would become Air Force Base aliaindeednamed after him as part of his philanthropy for military service during World War II (the base opened in 1948). At first there were just 10 buildings on airbase but soon hundreds more were built due to generous donations from area businesses and individuals who sawAir Force Base as an essential element in their community development plans around Illinois during that time period." From then until its closure in 1991 as part of downsizing Army recruiting efforts across America during the early 1990's AFB became known as "The City Without Walls" because all buildings within limit had been purchased by or leased to local businesses/ organizations which used them for marketing purposes such as exhibits at trade shows or functions sponsored by civic committees etc... Many current residents have grown up memories playing softball or basketball on various courts located throughout AFB including one court still used today for soccer practice! dozens if not hundreds if not thousands more people have visited AFB over the years either locally or visiting relatives/ friends never having even heard about AFB existed prior thereto!"

In 1872, an act of the General Assembly created Mclean County and renamed Huntley the county seat. The first post office in Huntley was established on October 8, 1837. The present day post office building was built in 1895 by John M. McDermott as part of a program to improve postal service in Illinois. At that time, it functioned as a stop on the Underground Railroad for fugitive slaves escaping from slavery. The early days of Huntley were difficult; however, through hard work and determination those years helped make it one of America’s most successful small towns by creating jobs and developing its economy into one of commerce and agriculture. Today, Huntsville is home to many businesses that continue to thrive thanks to its proximity to Chicago; however, much like his namesake town before him, John M. McDermott remains an important part of local history with his contributions to growth and progress within the community
