The first European settlers in Huntley were white men named John and James Hunt who landed on July 8, 1812 from the vessel "John Adams" in what is now Huntley Township. They established a log cabin near present-day Main Street and built a stockade around their farmstead which they named Foxholes after their friend General Israel Putnam who had helped them find their way westward during the American Revolutionary War. After some time they sold their holdings to other pioneers and moved to what is now Carbondale where John Hunt operated an flour mill until his death in 1857. James Hunt continued operations until his death in 1872; he had also acquired land west of Carbondale and founded what is today Aurora (in Cook County). In 1868 James' son Hiram James became one of three trustees for Sangamon County when it was organized; Hiram served concurrently until 1974 when he succeeded his father as trustee emeritus due to age limitations At that time there were only two trustees – one each from Carbondale and Aurora – making Huntsville (now Crystal City) the third village in Sangamon County behind Foxholes/Aurora and Newton/Newtonville.* * There are no records remaining from prior settlements so it’s likely that these villages were not incorporated into either Carbondale or Aurora until after Huntsville became chartered as a village!

Huntley, Illinois is a small town in south-central Illinois that was founded in 1837. The community is named after Huntley, England, the birthplace of James K. Polk. The population of Huntley was 2,664 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Huntley was John Witherspoon who came to the area in 1837. In 1851, Levi Booth settled in Huntley and started a tannery. John Hargrave came to Huntley in 1865 and built a gristmill. A post office called Huntley was established in 1870, and remained open until 1919. In 1881, United States Senator David Dixon appointed Captain George Tilton as the first mayor of Huntleysville because Dixon felt that local officials were not doing enough to promote trade within the community. In 1886, Clarence Bigham became mayor after being elected from one of two districts which included Huntsville Township. In 1907, Harry Wexford organized the Town Post Office into three departments: Agriculture (With Cement), Commerce (With Coal), and Services ( Including repairs on cars). By 1928 there were 11 businesses with over 100 employees located inside or near the post office including 6 grocery stores and 3 meatpacking plants across town alone! In 1932 Mayor Charles Fenton merged all three services into one department under new management which remains now known as 'Services'. In 1955 Jerald Peele became mayor after serving for 4 years as deputy city manager under Mayor Calvin Greenough Jr.. During his term Jerald spearheaded many advancements such as the construction of City Hall which still stands today; adding streetlights throughout town; creating an open space west of City Hall through donation from developer Tom Dooley; developing downtown streetscape with new sidewalks; initiating much needed patrol/civilian enhancement projects such as providing more parking for citizens during rush hour; increasing funding for public education by implementing Head Start programs; expanding libraries hours;and enacting legislation legalizing gambling within 50 miles of Chicago!

The base closed in 1992 but its memories live on in the name of an airfield that once stood just outside town
