Huntley is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,527 at the 2000 census. The Huntley School District serves the community. The first settler in Huntley was James Higginson in 1836. A post office called Huntley was established in 1839, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1847, George Prentice built a cabin on what is now Main Street. About 1850, John Dorman settled here and about 1860 Elisha Cook moved to Huntley from Clarendon Township near Staunton. In 1871, Elijah Bogue homesteaded land east of Main Street and built a cabin there. He named his farm "Huntley". Huntsville Cemetery opened there in 1898 with burials of local residents who died during the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1907 the Chicago & Northwestern Railway ran an line through Huntleys northeast corner linking Carbondale with Effingham Junction via Galena City; this line later became part of the Illinois Central Railroad system. That year also saw the construction of a new school building on North Main Street – which served as the village hall until it burned down in 1916. The Post Office closed at midnight on July 1st 1906 due to high winds that day; however mail continued to be delivered into town until sometime after 9am on July 2nd when all mail stopped being received because of damage caused by high winds that evening across much of Kane County A new Post Office had been constructed just west of Village Hall on South Main Street by 1911 when it also closed for lack of customers During World War I (1917-1918), Huntley served as an ammunition dump for Carbondale Army Ammunition Plant #2 where munitions were unloaded and stored before being transported to other locations around Kane County . As such,Huntleys nickname "the Ammunition Mill Town" persists today . In 1919 Gertrude Kapp conducted experiments at Carbondale Army Ammunition Plant #2 using rats as subjects without their owners knowledge or consent; these Experiments continue to this day as Kapp Research Laboratories . On November 15th 1918 White Star Line Steamship "Eritrea", hit by a German torpedo while en route from Venice Italy to New York City - lost both her engines aft amidships - commenced rescue operations but only managed to save 4 passengers including 3 children before hitting an uncharted reef off Hampton RoadsVirginia killing all aboard including one infant daughter Nellie Sayles... After weekslong efforts two Royal Navy ships HMSO 129and HMCS NinetyNine arrived off Virginia beach seeking survivors but only rescued four crewmembers none of whom survived eitherShip lost engine room after grounding on reef so could not make port .. Of thosefour crew members only one man still alive today -George Prentice - he had boarded HMSO 129 days earlier prior to her arrival !!

Huntley is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,824 at the 2010 census. Huntley is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name comes from George Hunt's farmstead on the east side of town. Huntley was platted in 1836 by George Hunt and James Wirtz. It was named for General John A. Hunt (1801-1872), who fought in the Mexican–American War and later served as Commandant of the United States Marine Corps at Quantico, Virginia. The first post office at Huntley was established in 1839; it closed in 1865. The first store opened at Huntley in 1840. In 1853, local resident Amos Eaton built a cotton gin and cooperative market on land he owned near present-day Elmhurst Road and Illinois Route 56. The market continued until 1903 when it burned down due to an electrical fire that destroyed most of the structure., In 1863, local resident Isaac Goodrich donated land to build what would become Fox Lake State Park ().
