Huntley is located on the banks of the Kankakee River and has a post office with ZIP code 61614. The first settler in Huntley was James Haughton in 1824. A Post Office was established here in 1829 and named for General William Gorham Hunt (1784-1854), an American general who served as Superintendent of Indian Affairs under President George Washington. The town site was surveyed by Ebenezer Mudge in 1830 and taken over by John Davenport & Company for $1,000 cash; it became an incorporated village on December 3, 1830. The first election to a Township Committee took place on January 16, 1831; James Haughton served as Chairman of the Committee On October 5, 1836 Rufus King opened up what would become known as King's Millrace between Kankakee River and Main Street - one of several early mills in Huntley On November 1st voters approved a proposal to change the name of town to "Huntley" after General George W. Hunt (1788-1872), an American general who had fought against Mexico during their war for independence On January 11th 1870 Jesse Lemberg reported that he had built a house on North Main Street which he offered for sale The first sales occurred on February 2nd 1870 with bids ranging from $2 per square foot to $200 per square foot In 1870 there were 10 residents living in Townships 1 through 4 and 95 residents living within unincorporated parts of Sangamon County
