Huntley was founded by Captain John Huntley in 1824 on the site of what is now Elmhurst, Illinois. The first post office in Huntley was established in 1830. Huntley was named for Colonel John Huntley (1791-1865), a Revolutionary War veteran and lieutenant colonel of the Illiniwek Regiment who became a brigadier general in the Union Army and member of President Abraham Lincoln's cabinet as Secretary of War from 1861 to 1865. The community likely derives its name from Huntleys' early land holdings thereabouts including three pieces of farm land stretching one mile (1 km) each east-west and south-north, lying near what is now Elmhurst avenue which led thence to Valentine Road. Captain John Huntley had come to America with his family in 1824 after serving as an ensign with British forces during the Napoleonic Wars. He settled on a triangular piece of property that included present day Elmhurst avenue and two other streets: main street, now called North Drive; and Court Street, which leads northeast to Park View Cemetery. In 1830 he organized a village named after him at this location - Huntleysville - but it did not take off until 1835 when he sold all his land within sight of Fort Dearborn so that people could live closer to their jobsite. In 1836 Captain John's son Robert moved into the village with his wife Sarah Addams and their children Samuel (5 years old), Harriet (3 years old), Charles (1 year old), Mary Jane (6 months old) and JosephineabellaRebeccaAnn(4 days old). Three more children would join them over time - Winthrop Edwin(9 months born), Franklin Denton(2 years old) and Elijah Hubbard(3 weeks premature). One of Robert's brothers also lived nearby on State Street with his family before moving westward around 1840-1845: James Atchison Caylor or Chaytor Caylor (). The city limits then extended far beyond today's boundaries zigzagly course along Lake Michigan shoreline heading due north toward wave breakers known then as Point Defiance () giving rise to rumors that someone living near Chicago had built himself an estate upon it (). “The village began life about 1830 as 'Huntleysville,'named for CaptJohn HUEnney...He sold all his lands within sight of Fort Dearborn so people could live closer to their jobsite."
