Homewood is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,752 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County. The Village of Homewood was organized on March 5, 1871 from part of the then-town of Westchester and from the portions of South Bend and East Dundee which lay east and south of that village's current line. On November 20, 1872, it became one of twenty villages created in Cook County by an act entitled "An Act to Promote Rural Welfare." On May 1, 1907, the Village had a total population over 3,000; however this number only counted residents who lived within its limits as defined by their homesite addresses. As such it does not include people who lived in other municipalities or in unincorporated areas surrounding the villages. In 1916-1920 there were several attempts to annex more adjacent municipalities but all were rejected due to lack of signatures from majority approvals required for annexation petitions. In 1951-1955 two communities (Leesborough and Arlington Heights) annexed by Homewood did not have enough signatures from residents to become official villages despite being very close in borders - Lee'sborough is now located just north of Arlington Heights while Arlington Heights is located just southeast of Leesborough). These annexations were later rescinded because they did not meet requirements for villagehood including residency fees and elections among villagers living within their boundaries instead relying solely on signature collection through referendum or even mail vote ballots which could be challenged if incorrect data was included on ballots or if no votes were cast as per regulations set forth by county officials at that time. In 1959 another attempt was made to annex more neighboring municipalities but this time with bothLee'sborough & Arlington Heights gaining official status as villages without any changes having ever taken place between them; however this also failed after Lleesborough withdrew its application following public outcry caused by new development near their boundaries
