The project would add 1 million square feet (100,000 m2) to downtown Homewood and would be anchored by Macy's Department Store and Sears Holding Company's Menard's department store. construction began on October 27th 2006 and concluded on December 20th 2007; it cost $126 million to build. The mall opened on April 12th 2009 with approximately 150 stores including Sears Holdings' Menard's department store which closed on September 30th 2017 due to poor sales trends

The town of Homewood, Illinois was founded in 1837 by John H. Paynter and his brother James. The town rapidly grew due to its location on the eastern edge of the new Illinois Territory and its access to a wide variety of natural resources. By 1850, Homewood had a population of about 350 people and was home to two churches, a school, a mill, and several farms. In 1861, the Battle of Gettysburg resulted in the incorporation of neighboring Decatur County into Illinois. As the county grew more populous,Homewood began to lose its importance as an agricultural center. However, because it lay adjacent to Chicago, it continued to be important as an industrial center until the mid-19th century when industry declined in Illinois due to technological advances. In 1874, John Paynter died without leaving any children behind and his estate was divided between his two brothers James and Nathan Paynter. James took over responsibility for running the business operations while Nathan supervised development projects within Homewood itself. This situation changed in 1888 when Nathan died suddenly at age 54 years old; James assumed full control of the business until his death in 1893. During this time period,James also developed what is now known as “The Strip” neighborhood which ran along Dearborn Avenue between State Street and Western Boulevard; this area became one of downtown Chicago’s most popular tourist destinations during this time period. In 1909-10 (the same year that Jane Addams founded Hull House),Homewood became part of City Hall District No.-5 which encompassed all but one municipality within Cook County (Chicago). At this point in its history,Homewood had become an increasingly diverse community with African Americans living among their white counterparts; however%, it remained overwhelmingly rural through most of its history despite efforts by various city officials to attract non-white businesses and residents alike. In recent decades, Homewood has experienced significant redevelopment including construction of numerous high-rise buildings such as One Michigan Place (formerly Sears Tower) and The Forum which have helped revive downtown Chicago’s fortunes while preserving much Of its historical architecture; however%, even after these successes there remains some tension between older residents who feel they have been left out since redevelopment occurred while younger professionals are quick to move into older buildings vacated by those who left earlier than they did Despite these challenges,,Homewood continues To enjoy strong economic growth throughout 2016 with job postings increasing 50% from 2015
