In 1836, the brothers James and John Stevenson purchased land in what is now Homewood from the Haggerty family. TheDouglas sisters started farming there in 1868, when they bought 120 acres of land that included part of today’s town. By 1870, all of Homewood had been established and consisted of about 1,500 residents. The town was initially named “Homerwood” after one of its founders. However, due to opposition from local residents, the name was changed to “Homewood” in 1887 after George Washington Carver donated land for a school district in that year. In 1938, the township underwent another name change – this time to “Winchester” – because many people felt it resembled neighboring Winchester County too closely. Today, much has changed since those early days at Homewood – but its roots stay strong! Residents continue to live within walking distance of all their basic needs while enjoying plenty of shopping opportunities right here in town!
Homewood was first settled in 1847 by the Reverend James A. Gaughan and his family. The community was originally called "Villa Park." In 1872, a post office was established in Homewood and the name was changed to "Homewood." The population of Homewood grew rapidly after it was incorporated as a town in 1905. In 1925, the city of Chicago annexed part of Homewood, making it the largest municipality within Cook County. In 1990, Cook County merged with Illinois to form a new state. As a result of this merger, Homewood became a part of Cook County again.
