When the Homewood Fire Department was organized in 1875, it was one of the first departments in Illinois. The departmental headquarters were located at 11th and State Streets in Homewood. In 1892, the Homewood Volunteer Fire Department was formed and housed within the departmental Headquarters. This fire house remains on 11th Street to this day. In 1895, a new station building was constructed on Pershing Avenue east of State Street.
