Today, Homewood is an affluent suburb located just north of Chicago with a population of nearly 54K people according to 2017 census data. The first people to live in Homewood were the Potawatomi. In 1814, the village was created from a part of the town of Bloomingdale. The first store was built on State Street in Homewood. It was called the Indian Store and it was used by the Native Americans for trading goods and services. The store was destroyed in 1836, but a new store called the White Horse Store opened in 1840. The White Horse Store closed in 1848, but a new store called the Smith Bros. Store reopened in 1850. The Smith Bros. Store lasted until 1865 when it was replaced by a grocery store called Sears and Roebuck which still stands today on South Green Street in Homewood.
