Homewood is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Homewood was Levi Coffin in 1837. He and his family built a log cabin on the banks of the Calumet River. By 1840, two families had moved to Homewood from nearby Cicero and were among its earliest residents. In 1851, Reverend Johnathan Littlejohn founded an Episcopal church in what became known as "Littlejohn's Hill." In 1871, John Pritzker bought property northeast of Homewood from Amos Kendall for $2 million. Pritzker planned to build a large mansion there but never did so because he passed away before it could be completed. Pritzker's nephew Emanuel Celler bought the house and added wings that served as both a home and office building until 1994 when it was sold to Harold Ivey for $140 million. Ivey changed its name to One Hopeful Place after his death in 2002 and now uses it as an event center and hotel complex called The Madison House (formerly The Renaissance). It is also home to many businesses including Sears Canada Holding Inc., Belknap Mills & Trading Company, Ford Motor Company's Lincoln plant, Knoppers' Paint Shop & Customizing Co., Jabil Corp., Phelps Dodge Corporation's Automotive Products Division (now ING Direct), Wurster Electric Supply Inc., H&R Block USA (now Sam’s Club) and Weingarten’s Jewelry store which closed in 2006 after over 25 years of business operation at 8500 N State Street.. A number of other businesses have been opened or are current operations within the boundaries of Homewood since then such as Subway sandwich shop located on Roosevelt Road just south of Interstate 95; King Soopers grocery store on Roosevelt Road between Eisenhower Parkway/I-95 Business Loop; Dunkin Donuts - located on FDR Road between Eisenhower Parkway/I-95 Business Loop; Miller Park - located off Roosevelt Rd just north of Interstate 95 near McHenry County Fairgrounds; Home Depot - located off Roosevelt Rd near McHenry County Fairgrounds; US Cellular Center - located off Roosevelt Rd near McHenry County Fairgrounds... .

The village of Homewood was founded in 1848 by John and Martha Lewis. The village grew quickly, and in 1875 it became a dry township. In 1902, the Township renamed itself Homewood Village after the Lewis family's donation of land to the town. The village had a population of 564 in 1920, and it reached its peak with a population of 1,412 in 1940. However, during World War II Homewood Village lost its status as a township because all homes were requisitioned for military use. After the war, Homewood Village declined until it reached its lowest point with only 451 residents in 1960. However, due to new development in the area, both the population and property values have been increasing steadily ever since. In 2016, Homewood was named one of "America's Fastest growing towns" by Forbes Magazine.
