Homewood is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Homewood is located on the south side of the city and has a ZIP code 60530. The name "Homewood" comes from "home-wood." The first inhabitants of this area were Native Americans who lived near what is now Loop Road and Pulaski Road. They hunted deer, bear, and other game on their land that today includes much of Homewood. After Englishman John James Audubon visited this area in 1836, he came up with the idea to name this community after himself because he thought it would be more people-friendly than either Hinsdale or Oak Lawn. At first, no one wanted to adopt the nickname because they considered it too short for a community name; however, Audubon's friends convinced him to change it to "Homewood." The village was incorporated as a municipality in 1903. In 1958 it became an independent city when Cook County merged with its neighboring county, DuPage County. In 1966 it merged again with neighboring Fullerton Township to form one large municipality called "Homewood/Fullerton". On February 14th, 1974 (the date fullerton Township split into two) Homewood became an official village once again with its own mayor and council members! As mentioned earlier, during World War II many residents of nearby Oak Lawn served in our Armed Forces; some even went overseas! Consequently there are numerous military bases throughout southeastern Cook County including those at Elmhurst (near Skokie), Fox Lake (in Glenview), Crystal Lake (in Danville), Plainfield (just outside of Mundelein), Rockford Park (just outside of Arlington Heights), Midway Ridge Air National Guard Base just north of Chicago-northwest suburban Aurora-and Iroquois Hills Golf & Country Club just east of Joliet just outside Woodridge! Today most residents live close by their jobs or homes which makes shopping convenient and easy! There are several grocery stores within walking distance as well as several convenience stores such as Giant Eagle and Kroger Plus as well as pharmacies such as CVS Health and Walgreens . There are also several small businesses located around town including: Applebee's restaurant owner Donny Kraytka opened his restaurant on Pulaski Road in 1978; we have since added another location - One Stop Shop - on North Avenue next to Wexner Medical Center; JCPenney store owner Rick Smith opened his store on North Avenue across from Sears Tower in 2006; Sam's Club manager Joey Conte opened his store on Northwest Side between Cicero Avenue and State Street in 2002... all these business owners have helped make HomewOOD one Of The Most Comprehensive Small Town Zones In America!
