Homewood is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 20,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlement in what would become Homewood was made by John and Sarah Childs on May 8, 1831. They were among the first white people to settle in what is now Cook County. The Childses built a log cabin on their farm which they named after their son Henry Childs (1793-1868). In 1835, John Meeks moved to Homewood from Galena, Illinois with his family and began cattle ranching. He became president of the Galena Stock Yards Company and also donated land for homesteading in what would become Homewood. In 1845, James Henshaw bought some of Meeks' land and founded Henshaw's Mill which still stands today as one of the most important mills in the area. On December 12, 1850, Ohioan Anthony Comstock discovered gold near what is now Lockport Township when he struck it with a shovel while working on his farm near present day Burr Ridge Road and Highway 47W. This discovery led to an initial rush of settlers to this area as gold prospectors arrived from all over America looking for veins of gold hidden under the earth. In 1861-62 many farmers who had found gold abandoned their claims because they lacked transportation or machinery to exploit them properly so several small towns formed around these early mining operations including Lockport Township (later renamed Burr Ridge), Belmont Park (later renamed Elmhurst), Westchester Hills (later renamed Woodland Hills), South Holland Heights (later renamed Dunwoody), and Winnetka Beach (now called Oak Park). By 1870 there were over 1,000 families living in Homewood together with 300 businesses operating out of 25 stores and 15 hotels employing 100 workers including 50 physicians practicing at 10 locations within a radius of . By 1880 there were only about 60 families remaining but 400 businesses remained open with 511 workers employed
